Exploring Inequalities: new Grand Challenges initiative

This new project, run in collaboration with UCL Public Policy and the Resolution Foundation, will combine the research and evidence on inequality in the UK, with the aim of leading to informed and joined-up policy making. The project will provide a multi-disciplinary exploration of the nature of – and intersections between – different types of structural inequality in the UK. By bringing together a broad range of experts from academia, NGOs, government and elsewhere, the review will cut across standard research and policy boundaries to synthesise and deepen our understanding of this issue. Find out more about this project as the work develops.

Around the six Grand Challenges

We have been working hard to get new collaborations off the ground, help new research projects to work and set up spaces where the research community can get together across disciplinary boundaries.

Some of the activities we've supported recently include:

UCL-Lancet Commission on Migration and Health published

The UCL-Lancet commission on Migration and Health, led by Professor Ibrahim Abubakar (Institute for Global Health), published its findings in December 2018 at the Intergovernmental Conference on the Global Compact for Migration. The report contains recommendations to improve the health impact of migration, with perspectives from migration data, health systems functioning, forced and labour migration, and culture and anthropology. The Commission recently held a policy-focused event at Chatham House, supported by Grand Challenges, to discuss the barriers and means to achieving Universal Health Coverage for migrants.

You can read more and listen to a recording from the event on the Chatham House website, download the commission's report on The Lancet's website and read more about the commission on our blog.
