Funding available now!
UCL researchers are invited to apply for Grand Challenges funding in two new priority areas:
- Environment and Wellbeing (closes 22nd Feb)
- Social and Ethical Aspects of Artificial Intelligence (closes 25th Feb)
Projects must be led by applicants from different disciplines, and can include third sector, or other external partners as relevant to the project proposed.

Exploring Inequalities: new Grand Challenges initiative
This new project, run in collaboration with UCL Public Policy and the Resolution Foundation, will combine the research and evidence on inequality in the UK, with the aim of leading to informed and joined-up policy making. The project will provide a multi-disciplinary exploration of the nature of – and intersections between – different types of structural inequality in the UK. By bringing together a broad range of experts from academia, NGOs, government and elsewhere, the review will cut across standard research and policy boundaries to synthesise and deepen our understanding of this issue. Ed Miliband joins experts to debate the welfare state
Former leader of the Labour Party, the Right Hon Ed Miliband MP, recently joined a panel of experts from the fields of psychiatry, global health and economics to discuss the future of the UK's welfare state. Renowned political cartoonist speaks at UCL
Malaysian cartoonist Zunar recently spoke at UCL in an event at the Institute of Advanced Studies, supported by the Grand Challenge of Cultural Understanding. Zunar has drawn cartoons about the state of corruption in his country, leading to his arrest and persecution.

Can museums improve young people's mental health?
Researchers from UCL Museums and the Institute of Education recently came together in a fascinating project to explore what impact using ideas from museum spaces and creative practice could have on young people based at psychiatric inpatient settings. Amid an increase in demand for NHS mental health services, can cultural spaces have an impact on your wellbeing?

Public event after major DfID grant
After receiving a grant from the Grand Challenges, the T-SUM project has now received funding from DfID for their work in sustainable urban mobility in sub-Saharan African cities.

Trans studies event coming in May
The Grand Challenge of Justice & Equality is supporting a one-day symposium to celebrate Trans Studies and Trans Lives, to be held on Saturday 25th May. This symposium seeks to recognise the difficult histories and structural issues faced by trans people, but also to ensure the present and future of trans people’s lives are not defined by oppression.
