Bardavon Launches 150th Birthday Celebration With
Free Community Open House

A Highlight of Poughkeepsie’s Monthly First Friday Event: February 1, 2019 – 5:00 to 7:00 pm

The Bardavon 1869 Opera House, Inc. will celebrate 150 years of presenting legendary performances in the Hudson Valley with a free open house for residents and visitors on Friday, February 1, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Bardavon, 35 Market Street in Poughkeepsie, on the exact 150th anniversary of the theater’s opening night in 1869, and as a highlight of the City’s monthly First Friday community arts event.

The Birthday Open House will launch a year of special events celebrating the Bardavon’s role as the community’s theater—a gathering place for diverse arts programs that have entertained, educated, and enlightened generations since Poughkeepsie merchant James Collingwood first built it for his City. As guests arrive, they will be greeted by the Juilliard-trained Wholly Brass Band performing a variety of tunes from across the decades. Henry's at the Farm of Buttermilk Falls Inn & Spa will provide complimentary hors d’oeuvres, and low-cost beverages will be available at the lobby bar.

At 6pm, City of Poughkeepsie Mayor Rob Rollison will join Executive Director Chris Silva to lead a birthday toast and cut the Mark Twain cake designed and donated by Frida’s Bakery. Throughout the gathering, guests will be free to roam the theater, walk across the stage and visit dressing rooms, where crew and staff will be on hand to describe what happens behind-the-scenes, and to share stories about the many performing artists and dignitaries who have visited—from Mr. Twain, Edwin Booth and John Philip Sousa to Tyrone Power and FDR to John Legend, Aretha Franklin, and more. House Organist Juan Cardona will also provide demonstrations on the Mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ, built for the Bardavon in 1927 and one of the few of its kind still in use in its original theater location.

At 7:00, the Wholly Brass Band will lead guests through the stage door at the back of the theater to continue the Birthday and First Friday celebrations at the King’s Court Brewing Company on Cannon Street. Plans for additional 150th events are under way and will be announced soon at www.bardavon.org.

A Cryptic New Gallery Redefines Art in Poughkeepsie

Something Cryptic this way comes.

In the middle of Main Street, at the heart of Poughkeepsie, a new gallery arrives to disrupt the sleepy stasis of art in the city. Dubbed Cryptic Gallery, the space serves as a home for everyone from up-and-coming artists and alternative creators to craft beer and sake fans, aspiring DJs, and art students of all mediums.

“We want to be a community for creatives,” says co-founder Ovid Reichelt. A longtime Hudson Valley resident, Reichelt co-founded the art concept two years ago with Denis Barry, a former FIT student and Dutchess County native. Back then, it was PoMeCo, or Poughkeepsie Media Collective, and it was their temporary project inside a rented gallery.

When the owner left in July 2018, Reichelt took over the lease and began work on rebranding the space. Following the success of their first independent show in October, he and Barry closed shop to give the project the 180-degree flip it deserved. After an intense four months of work and the addition of new partners Luke Grady (a former tattoo artist, current contemporary artist, and HVAC laborer by trade) and Kevin Lechner (a DJ, musician, and producer), the group opened the doors at Cryptic on January 11...continue reading
