This session will share information on recent key student mobility figures and general trends in internationalization from around the region followed by a deeper dive into examples of successful partnerships in three countries: Brazil, Colombia, Cuba and Mexico. The session will also include discussion and sharing of experiences, challenges and successes between the participants and the facilitators to encourage ideas for new or further engagement in this region.

English language programs are considering new program models as the populations and needs for English study change and expand. Campus English teaching centers can be an invaluable partner in adding diversity to a campus, as well as opening mobility opportunities for under-served populations. Learn how English proficiency is unevenly available around the world, and how schools, universities, foundations, government agencies and others can expand opportunities through partnering with and supporting a campus-based English program.

Access and Equity

Evidence for Study Abroad - Access for Underrepresented Students
  • Lindsay Calvert, Lead, Generation Study Abroad, IIE (Chair)
  • Angela Bell, CASSIE Project Director and Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Policy Analysis, University System of Georgia
  • Laura Engel, PhD, Associate Professor of International Education and International Affairs; Director, International Education Program, George Washington University
  • Andrew Gordon, CEO and Founder, Diversity Abroad
  • Don Rubin, PhD, CASSIE Co-PI and Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies, Language and Literacy Education, and Linguistics, University of Georgia
This panel will focus on the data-driven methods and evidence to address the impact of international education and study abroad on underrepresented students. With data-based projects, such as: the Consortium for Analysis of Student Success through International Education (CASSIE) led by Dr. Don Rubin and Angela Bell through the University System of Georgia, and Dr. Laura Engel's recent research on outcomes of education abroad for K-12 students, we are learning of the impacts of international education at all levels, specifically minoritized populations. In addition, Diversity Abroad's Access, Inclusion, Diversity, & Equity (AIDE) Roadmap supports institutional and organizational assessment to gauge progress towards diversity and inclusion.  Presenters will draw from their experiences in the field and engage attendees in a discussion on current and future data trends and needs that will help address issues of access to study abroad for underrepresented students.

Student Mobility

Cultivating Career Readiness from International Experiences

  • Sherif Barsoum, Assistant Vice President for Global Services, New York University
  • Caroline Donovan White, Senior Director, NAFSA: Association of International Educators (Chair)
  • Jane Ann Williams, Associate Provost for International Engagement, Montclair State University

A variety of studies and opinion pieces describe the need for a workforce that exhibits "career readiness" skills.  How do we help students with international experience frame their skills with these competencies in mind?  Students often need guidance to help them see how the academic, cultural, and personal skills learned in an intercultural environment must be translated effectively to convey their relevant to employers.  While these services are often left to the university career counselors, international educators also have a key role to play in this effort.

Scholars & Innovation

The Nexus of Academia and the Private Sector // How Institutions Advance Innovation

  • Amy Baker, Managing Director, PIE News (Chair)
  • Elizabeth Bucknor, Education Partnership Director, Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade)
  • Teemu Kokko, Rector, Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences
  • Maeve Liston, PhD, Director of Enterprise & Community Engagement; Senior Lecturer in Science, Mary Immaculate College

Private sector companies and academic institutions are increasingly working together to help build a talent pipeline and train students and scholars with skills needed in the workforce.  What is the role of each (private sector companies / organizations and higher education institutions) for the economy of the future? How do we continue to innovate to grow the talent pipeline and to make sure that the private sector, HEIs and students are all benefitting from these partnerships?
