A NOTE FROM OUR FOUNDER, HACKIE REITMAN, M.D.:

I wanted to send a quick note to highlight two great guests that came by the Different Brains office to inspire our neurodiverse interns and volunteers: Evan Forde and Connor Cunningham!

Evan, who also serves on the advisory council of the Hackie Reitman Unit of the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Broward County, is the first African-American oceanographer to conduct a research mission aboard a submersible craft, which he achieved in 1979. Evan has received the Congressional Commendation, the South Florida Federal Employee of the Year, and the Administrator’s and Technology Transfer Award. He is absolutely brilliant, and if that wasn't enough - he has a big heart and wants to make sure the next generation are given the tools to reach their full potential!

Connor I met when I was interviewed by his mother, celebrated journalist Kitty Dumas. She told me about her amazing son - then in middle school. Even though he was at that young age, he was already speaking publicly throughout South Florida to educate the world about autism. Now going to college to become a filmmaker, Connor is still a great self-advocate that wants to change the world and help society understand and accept people on the spectrum.

So thank you to two of my heroes that are making differences in so many lives, and who are working to make society inclusive of all our differences!
