Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Seasonal Depression or SAD is a kind of depression that occurs each year during the same season, which is usually fall or winter and ends in spring or summer.
The symptoms of SAD are the same as depression except that they only occur during a certain period of the year. Symptoms include fatigue, restlessness, problems with sleep, lack of energy, anxiety, irritability, extreme sadness, withdrawal from social activities, and unable to concentrate.

SAD is treated by light therapy. You would sit about two to three feet away from the light device which is usually white florescent light tubes. This therapy is very safe and usually works well for most patients. The treatment is normally thirty minutes long. The patient can purchase these lights designed just for SAD online, and these lights vary in price.
There are also many herbs that can help the side effects of depression and increase mood and energy. Cascade Health Clinic offers many therapies for depression and anxiety related to SAD.
Diet and exercise also help fight depression. Light exposure is very important to help treat SAD. Even if it is cloudy outside you will still reap the benefits of daylight exposure and fresh air.
