The Sporting News' Bernstein reports the NCAA Board of Governors is pushing forward on measures designed to ease student-athletes back into strenuous workouts after low-activity periods in an effort to reduce offseason workout deaths. Of note, "It would also discourage the use of intensive workouts as a form of punishment, and establish how to properly diagnose and treat heatstroke." NCAA Chief Medical Officer Hainline: "It’s a huge leap forward because frankly, and we state this in the document, the vast majority of these non-traumatic catastrophic deaths and injuries are preventable." Hainline also mentions the possibility of "consequences" for schools that don't follow protocols. (link)
From D1Baseball's Rogers, "SCOOP: The @NCAA has decided to allow college baseball to get together its own early recruiting rules/dates just like football and basketball. They will give baseball time to nail down specific dates. This is very positive news for baseball. We’ll see if the recommendations pass. There is no guarantee the @NCAA will accept these recommendations, but clearly shows the organization sees a distinction with baseball. That had been lacking in the past." Additionally, it looks like a new recruiting calendar that was recommended for Baseball won't be voted on until April. (link)
James Madison AD Bourne reviews FB donor level changes as a result of the new federal tax code. The Dukes now have two different ways fans can support the program, one (The Proud & True Fund) that's 100% tax deductible & the other (The Duke Club Seat Contribution) that includes "home-seating perks for football." Annual fund donations have progressed to the $2.5M to 2.6M range, wants to double that total against a scholarship bill of $10M to $11M. Bourne: "The future of athletics, as it probably will be with universities in general, are going to be directly dependent on outside support. […] So you not only need to work with them, but you have to think about how you’re going to grow beyond where you are. Our focus is to significantly increase the dollars that come into intercollegiate athletics from a donor perspective both with the number of donors as well as the dollars themselves. A lot of the strategy we develop and the things we do, we do it with a cautious eye." (link)
Pittsburgh FB HC Narduzzi is clearly not super excited about the new student-athlete transfer rules, "It’s become really a mess. I don’t know if I’d say it’s good, bad. It’s free agency. It just gives kids a way to find a different place if things don’t go perfectly. I really don’t like it at all. […] I think kids are going to make a lot of bad decisions. We’re just teaching the kids that there’s an easier way to get out of this, instead of working hard and trying to improve your status." (link)
Tennessee FB attendance from last season dipped to an announced average of 92,984, but the scanned average was 77,906. The former is the lowest mark since 2012. Vols AD Fulmer has pointed to winning & fan experience as two keys. Fulmer after a trip to Yankee Stadium, "They have a place for millennials to come and plug in, stand up and visit, do their thing. They can watch (the game) on television, order food online. They may or may not ever go and actually watch the game." (link); The 2018 numbers at UConn included an announced average of 21,000 per game, but a scanned average of 10,032. Huskies AD Benedict: "The easy answer is winning or the lack thereof. It’s been since 2011 that we’ve had a winning season in football, so I think that wears on a fanbase." (link)
Finally Official: Nike will take over on-field jerseys for Major League Baseball starting in 2020 in a 10-year deal. The Swoosh swooped in after Under Armour had to pull out. Bloomberg's Novy-Williams says Fanatics will "make and sell all the Nike apparel sold at retail (including jerseys), similar to the deal Fanatics has upcoming with the @NFL." (link)
The Pac-12 has opted out of its deal with Levi's Stadium for the 2020 version of its FB title game. Las Vegas seems to be the leader in the clubhouse among media types. Los Angeles could also be on the board. The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner suggests combining the game with a high-profile MBB doubleheader for maximum conference exposure. (link); The Horizon League will play its MBB & WBB tourney semifinal & final games in Indianapolis from 2020 through 2022. Indiana Farmers Coliseum will serve as host. (link)

Stadium's Wittry writes on why ADs should practice more patience with MBB HCs. Wittry looked at all HCs in the seven biggest MBB leagues who were hired since 2001-02, took over a program that didn't make the NCAA Tourney in the season prior & has been at his respective institution for at least four years. 35 HCs fit the bill & that list was ten narrowed down (for reasons not exactly thoroughly explained other than they are all in the AP Top 25 this week) to Virginia, Michigan, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Marquette, Maryland, Auburn, Houston and Villanova. Notable takeaway, "Besides Kentucky, which won 35 games in the first year under John Calipari, the other nine schools improved their win total from Year 1 to Year 4 by an average of 10 wins." (link)
Stadium's Goodman continues his 'Conference Chain of Command' with the MEAC as coaches around the league ranked each HCs job based on nine variables. Final rankings: North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, Norfolk State, Morgan State, Howard, Coppin State, Florida A&M, Bethune Cookman, Delaware State, South Carolina State, Maryland-Eastern Shore & Savannah State. Biggest outliers: Bethune #1 in Admission Requirements, but 8th overall, Howard #12 in Admission Requirements, but 5th overall, NC A&T #8 in the same category, but 1st overall & South Carolina State #3 in History/Tradition, but 10th overall. (link)
Yahoo's Forde trekked down to Murray to watch the Racers take on Belmont on Thursday night in an OVC barnburner. 42 NBA scouts from 22 organizations were in attendance to see Murray State standout Morant, which leads Forde to, "If the NBA sees value in Murray State and Belmont, perhaps the NCAA tournament selection committee should as well. If it’s a Selection Sunday choice between a 10th team from the Big 10, a third team from the abysmal Pac-12 or a second team from the OVC, why not these guys?" Forde also points to the Southern Conference's profile this season, along with the consistency of the WCC, "If — and it’s a big if — the committee is willing to open its 68-team bracket beyond the power-conference cartel." More. (link)
It's Personnel: FootballScoop reports Morgan State AD Scott is making a FB HC change. (link); Georgia Tech FB HC Collins' seven-year deal averages $3.3M, beginning with $3M for his first year with $100K annual bumps. If fired in the first four years, Collins receives 100% of remaining value, beyond that it drops to $2.4M each year. GT is paying the $2.5M buyout to Temple, but if Collins leaves before his fifth season, he owes $4M in year one, with $1M decreases annually. $1.275M possible in bonuses, including $700K for a natty. Lots more. (link); 16-year assistant Sharp will take over the Virginia Tech Men's Golf team at the end of the season when current HC Hardwick retires. (link); Colgate Women's LAX HC Young steps down to make the move with her husband, a former Colgate FB AC, to another school. AC Beville will serve as Interim HC. (link); UCF Women's Soccer HC Roberts Sahaydak gets a one-year extension that will keep her with the Knights through the 2023 campaign. (link); Kent State AD Nielsen selects LIU Brooklyn's DeSandes-Moyer as his new Field Hockey HC. (link); The trailer for current Kansas/former LSU FB HC Miles' latest movie is out. (link)
Tech: Juniper Research says the mobile ticketing market, current ballparked at $14B, will surge to $23B by 2023. (link); The Boston Celtics use Viz Libero to create some pretty impressive game highlights that include highlighting the key players involved, statistics graphics above player heads & more. GE is the sponsor of the highlight segments, which definitely look like a step forward compared to most highlight clips. (link); Tropicana Field, home of MLB's Tampa Rays, is going cashless. Per SBJ's Kaplan, The Trop is the first American sports facility to do so. (link)
"It’s really motivating, honestly, as a head coach to have someone who’s that driven. And being a strong female leader is so important for myself, to have someone like that as a role model, but also for female student-athletes to see not only a female head coach, but also a female AD. Really, there’s nothing you can’t do." That's Pitt Gymnastics HC Snider on Panthers AD Lyke, who was recently awarded the 'Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the Year' award. Lyke: "It’s never about one person. I know everybody says, ‘It starts at the top.’ It does, but I don’t think anyone can argue with the fact that it’s all about the people you bring in, because when you hire great people, they hire great people. […] Our word [as a staff] last year was 'transform.' I don’t know that we’ve transformed. It is transforming. We’re in the process of it still." (link)
Latest thoughts from UCF AD White. On the UCF-Florida FB matchup discussions, "That game was never going to happen because it doesn't make sense for schools like us to play two-for-ones. Two-for-ones are for schools that don't sell out. We need to schedule the way we need to schedule to build our football program and our fan base." On his tenure in Orlando, "I couldn't be more invested for the long haul and everything that we're doing at UCF. I want to see this through. There's not a more fulfilling way to have a career as an athletic director." (link)
Former Nebraska FB student-athlete & current NFL stand-out Suh says he's fully on board with Huskers HC Frost & AD Moos, "I didn’t believe in some things the former A.D. was doing and had in place. I didn’t necessarily remove myself from the team, I was just helping people that I knew from afar. I was still close with people I knew in the organization. I was just sad to see a lot of the things that transpired. That’s kind of where it was." (link)
Several House Democratic floor leaders in New Mexico have filed a bill that would give UNM $2M to bring back skiing, beach volleyball and men's soccer - all of which are due to be cut by this summer - and demand transparency about the school's sports funding by requiring a financial report be sent annually to the legislative finance committee. Rep. Martinez, (D) Albuquerque: "I think they do need the funding and need some money to get these sports programs back in place. I think it's a reasonable ask and with the accountability piece in there, there shouldn't be any problems." Rep. Fajardo, (R) Los Lunas: "I support skiing, I support soccer, I support those programs and we need to put those back in. But is it the legislature's job to fix UNM's budget?" (link)
Yesterday was the first day college baseball programs could venture outdoors & George Washington unveiled its new $3.5M Fassnacht Clubhouse & training facility. 6,200 square feet, new locker room, coaches offices, player's lounge, indoor turf space & batting cages that are now enclosed. (link); Louisville has a new Pro Player Locker Room thanks to local entrepreneur & alum Flaker, whose name is on the new digs. Dedicated space for litany of Cards who have moved on to pro ball over the past decade-plus. Snazzy lighting, multiple screens, steam shower, direct access to home dugout, more. (link)
Also Noticed: Comprehensive MBB rankings chart. Remember, updated every afternoon-ish. (link); Western Carolina picks up a $1M planned gift from former FB student-athlete Wade, $450K of which will go to athletics. (link); Texas Tech broke ground yesterday on a new basketball practice facility. The Womble family provided the $10M lead gift for the $29.5M space, which should be completed in roughly 18 months. Populous with the design. (link); Michigan will pay Western Michigan $1.4M for the 2021 FB game in Ann Arbor, up from the $1.2M payday from the Wolverines for this past season's matchup. (link); Grand Canyon freshman volleyball student-athlete Gianni is recovering from open-heart surgery, which he underwent after suffering cardiac arrest during practice in December. Credits Athletic Trainer Storm and Special Asst. to the HC Flowers for saving his life in the gym that day. (link); The NFL reports a 29% reduction in concussions during the 2018 regular season compared to last year. The preliminary injury data "does not attribute the change to individual factors such as rule changes or improved protective equipment." (link); The Players' Tribune cut eight employees this week. No word yet on which departments were affected. (link)
Correction: Middle Tennessee has inked a FB home-and-home deal with Colorado State, not Colorado. Apologies for the confusion. (link)
