Heartaches & Heroes
The "F Litter" Rollercoaster
Even under the best circumstances volunteering can present significant challenges. Volunteer organizations in general operate, better yet survive, on little or negative funding and with a constant need for additional tangible help in the way of people and or resources. SWB Rescue was recently presented with a rescue situation that quickly developed into the “perfect storm of storms”.
Most of you already know about the “F Litter” and their momma, “Foxy”. Not unusual for an expectant girl like Foxy ending up in a rescue program like SWB. In this case, unfortunately, her sweet pups were afflicted with Parvo and were suddenly thrust into veterinary care. Thankfully, Foxy never exhibited any symptoms whatsoever.
The amount of emotional support, love, and work (not to mention lack of sleep) provided by the fosters was exemplary. As usual, the SWB team of volunteers also did their part. Volunteering – again that means doing selfless things without any expectation nor acceptance of reimbursement of any type. The flip side of volunteering is that it does not necessarily make vet bills disappear. And there were plenty of bills.
In a short period of two weeks, SWB had nearly $13,000 of vet bills related to the “F Litter” alone. All the while, other rescues and operations for SWB are continuing, which in their own regard generate negative cash flow. Never out of focus within this debt was the well-being of all of these wonderful pups and their momma. That is and always will be the primary concern. It became clear to the volunteers at SWB, that we have many people who recognized our plight, stepped up and contributed to our cause.
The response by people who were following SWB and the saga of Foxy and the F Litter was astounding. Because of many, many wonderful people, contributions made it possible to cover the outstanding vet bills. All contributions are appreciated and put directly to this wonderful cause!
As you are aware, we were not able to save all of these sweet pups but were also able to place the surviving pups into wonderful homes! Now let’s get Foxy into her furever home!

Volunteer Spotlight
Sam Clark
by Angela Schmedeman
Sam has been with Shepherds Without Borders since December of 2016 and has worn many hats during this time. He loves all things photography! He has beautifully captured the hearts and personalities of many of our rescued GSDs, completing photoshoots for approximately 40 of our rescues! Sam has mentored many new photographers, empowering each volunteer to capture the true vision of Shepherds Without Borders. In addition to photography, Sam has completed home visits as well as played a major role in creating our beautiful calendar, decal, and volunteer attire.
In his free time, he enjoys astrophotography, attending and photographing air shows as well as the various obstacle course races his wife Brandy (also a supporter/volunteer of the rescue) participates in. He loves strawberry lemonade and spending time with his family and two dogs.
Thank you Sam!
