February 2019 Newsletter

From Mr. Phillips, Head of School

This month many of us will be buying candy and flowers to express our love to someone. When we think about what love means, there is no greater example than Jesus Christ. Jesus willingly took our punishment for our sins upon himself because of His love for us. Have you accepted His gift of salvation? Have you experienced God’s love in your life? I pray that you have. One thing that I have learned in my short time here is that our teachers love their students. As you consider re-enrollment for next year, please know that your children are loved here at Curtis.

- Mr. Scott Phillips, Head of School

Upcoming Open House

Our CBS Open House is this Thursday, February 7, from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Do you know someone who may be interested in attending our upcoming Open House? Consider sharing the details by sending them this flyer.

Daycare & Preschool News

Wait lists in the Daycare & Preschool are long, and we are already filling in seats! Please be sure to enroll your student for the 2019-2020 school year. Enrollment opens to the public on Friday, March 1, and you may lose your spot! For questions or additional information, please contact Kellie Nieves at knieves@curtisbaptist.org.

The Daycare & Preschool invite you to join them in their Gifts of Love collection.
Curtis Baptist Church is active in community outreach through their GAP ministry for women and D&D (Dinner and Discipleship) ministry to men. This ministry of the church provides weekly Bible Study, meals, clothing and other essential personal items to those who are in need. The CBS Daycare & Preschool will collect winter clothing items and personal care items through Valentine’s Day in an effort to restock the supplies for this important ministry. I have listed the requested items below. Thank you for your prayerful consideration to participate in our Gifts of Love collection to assist Curtis Baptist in being the hands of feet of Jesus to the surrounding community.

Personal Care Items:
- Men’s cologne/aftershave (they love and rarely get)
- Men's body spray (we also can get that for $1 at Dollar Tree--Power Stick brand)
- Powdered laundry detergent

Men’s Clothing Needs (new or gently used/laundered - ready to wear):
- Short-sleeved (or long-sleeved) plain-colored t-shirts
   - Sizes large/XL/2XL/3XL
   - Please no undershirts
- Coats/Jackets
- Hoodies

We will have boxes in the Preschool Hall for collection over the next few weeks. Our collection will end on Thursday, February 14.

Middle & High School News

This semester our Middle School and High School students will be attending chapel on a weekly basis. The chapel programs are designed to address the issues that young people are facing in today’s world.

Mr. Phillips is opening the semester with a series of lessons on “Choices”. This study will focus on making God-honoring decisions in real-life situations.

Parents are always invited to join us during our chapel services each Thursday in Café 180. High School chapel is from 10:40 am - 11:40 am; Middle School chapel is from 1:15 pm - 2:05 pm. As always, enter through the Elementary Office.

- Mr. Larry Ford, Middle and High School Principal

Guidance News

Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit programs provide opportunities for Georgia and South Carolina high school students to take state funded, college-level courses and earn concurrent credit toward a high school diploma and a college degree while in high school.

Currently, we have eight students in grades 11 and 12 enrolled in dual enrollment courses. Students are enrolled in Augusta University, Augusta Technical College, Truett McConnell University, and the University of South Carolina-Aiken. Some of our students combine attending classes on campus as well as completing online courses from the same university. Other students complete their courses through online courses only. The plan for each student is determined by the needs and interests of the student. Students must apply and be accepted to the institution where they enroll for courses. Some of the courses students have taken this year or are currently enrolled in are: Advanced Composition, College Algebra, Introduction to Psychology, and Introduction to Sociology.

Over the past few years, many of our students have taken advantage of this opportunity to earn college credits while in high school.

- Mrs. Donna Williams, Guidance Counselor

An admissions representative from the following colleges will be on campus during the high school lunch period to meet with students and answer any questions they might have about their college, the admissions process and financial aid.
  • Georgia College - Monday, February 11
  • Georgia Military College - Wednesday, February 13
  • Emmanuel College - Tuesday, February 19
  • Andrew College - Wednesday, February 20
