Unison Hikathon has been a regular fundraising event of Hong Kong Unison since 2009. In 6 short videos across 3 languages including English, Urdu/Hindi and Nepali, Unison Education Video Series "You, Your Child and School" explains to parents the school application procedures, how to choose a suitable school, and the basics of the Hong Kong education system so that parents can better support their child. All clips are now online on Unison's YouTube page and website.

Scholarship Camp 獎學金得獎者訓練營
On 29th & 30th Dec, Unison started the scholarship program strong with an overnight camp for our scholarship awardees at the YWCA Sydney Leong Holiday Lodge in South Lantau. The awardees bonded over games, activities, and chatting into the late night. Returning awardees also ran games for the group. Awardees were eager to know more about Unison's work on ethnic minority issues.

Awardee Capacity Building 獎學金得獎者訓練
On 20 January, Unison organised a capacity building workshop for awardees. The workshop was on understanding human rights, the history of Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as key values like equality and dignity. The awardees were active and engaged in the exercises and gained a deeper appreciation of how human rights are important to local issues.

LegCo Public Hearing on ICESCR 立法會公聽會
On Jan 21, the LegCo Panel on Constitutional Affairs held a public hearing on the outline of the topics in the fourth report of Hong Kong under the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). Unison raised our concerns about the lack of progress regarding the amendment of the Race Discrimination Ordinance to bring government powers and functions within its purview, the absence of a Chinese as a Second Language Policy and the persistence of the de facto segregation phenomenon in the public education system, despite recommendations from various United Nations treaty bodies over the years.

School Talks 學校講座
In this month, Unison conducted 3 mock interviews for F6 students at YY3, Delia (Glee Path) and Delia (Hip Wo) to improve their interview skills. Unison Scholarship awardees responded enthusiastically to the opportunity to facilitate the workshops, because they once were desperate for this kind of coaching. Our awardees said that their own lives had been touched by conversations with previous Unison awardees when they were in secondary school.

As a small NGO that receives no government subsidy, Unison appreciates the valuable support provided by our interns and volunteers to our advocacy, research, community outreach and administrative work. Our interns learn about challenges facing the ethnic minority community hands-on through engaging in purposeful projects.

Bidhya Shrestha joined us recently as our Research Intern focusing on the equitable and quality education of ethnic minority children in kindergarten. Born and raised in Hong Kong, she is currently studying Bachelor of Arts at the University of Hong Kong.

Yip Tsun Sing is the latest addition to the Unison family. He is a Year 4 student majoring in Cultural Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is excited for the opportunity to learn about ethnic minority issues hands-on.

Christine Lo, our previous intern, has rejoined Unison as a volunteer and is assisting our research on equal access to education opportunities. She is a PCLL student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She and her team recently won the PILnet Law for Change Student Competition and is about to execute her project on ethnic minority domestic violence.
