January 2019 Newsletter

HAPPY 2019!!

Your ASA Sailing Director is Back at Work

Lauri Kalkkinen, your ASA Sailing Director, is back at work for the 2019 season after his short break to Europe.  And here are a few words from Lauri as to the 2019 season and beyond:

I'm very happy to be back in Canada this year.

I hope to further develop last year's growth in all the youth teams and make 2019 season even better.

We are entering a new cycle for the Canada Summer Games 2021 -- here is what you should be watching out for:

  • Spring 2019 guidelines for selections/trainings requirements
  • Season 2019 application for the selection process
  • Season 2020 selection of the candidates
  • From selection until 2021 Games = training

I would like to point out to all clubs that have sailing programs outside of the CANSail criteria (such as scouts, adult sailing or open clubs days) to report the number of people participating as it assists the ASA to obtain further money from Alberta Sport Connections.

If you have any questions or suggestions for the 2019 season, please get in contact via email:  info@albertasailing.com

The ASA MOSS Program has been suspended
for the 2019 Season

Alberta Sailing Association Board has passed a motion to suspend the ASA MOSS (Mobile Opti Sailing School) Program for the 2019 season.  We will be offering coaching for lake communities throughout the summer.  Please get in touch with our Sailing Director info@albertasailing.com for dates and cost, as soon as possible -- dates will fill quickly.

Clagett announced the Recipients of the 2018 Clagett Boat Grant!

For those who do not know about the C. Thomas Clagett Jr. Memorial Clinic & Regatta, it is so much more than just a clinic and regatta -- it is "a program that will enable sailors with disabilities to reach their personal levels of achievement" (Mission statement).  With that said, the organization gifted four boats and one of the recipients is from Alberta -- Wendy Frazier -- CONGRATULATIONS!!

Further words as to this amazing accomplishment have been acquired and adapted from 'The Clagett Regatta:  Quarterly eNewsletter' Vol. 1, Issue 4 (December 2018):

Hometown:
Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Sailing Bio:
  • Wendy began sailing in 2013

  • In Wendy's own words she is "a
sailor in a land locked prairie province."
Wendy regularly travels from Calgary
to Victoria to train and compete.

  • In addition to the 2.4mR Wendy
also competitively sails the Martin 16.
Fun Facts:
  • Wendy is also a curler - she has been to the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championships five times with Team Alberta.

  • Wendy has two cats:   Marina & Elliot

  • Wendy turned 50 this year (2018) - she chose sail number 49, so that she "can stay 49 and holding!"

  • When she's not on the water, Wendy works as a Career and Employment Consultant.

How to go about accessing Casino Money for your Club
The Alberta Sailing Association had yet another very successful Casino in the Fall of 2018 -- thank you to all of the volunteers, again!  With that said, I know that some clubs would like to access funds for their organization...  First, I would like everyone to understand that there are strict guidelines for the use of the funds and the procedure in which we can provide the funds to your organization.  Secondly, the past is, simply, the past.  With time there is change and with change we must all adapt and adopt to move forward.
The Board is creating an application form that must be completed before we can release any money to any organization -- this application will be available in February.  Our Sailing Director, Lauri Kalkkinen, is very well-versed in the process and procedures that we must follow and here is the link to the 170 page Reference Manual for those sleepless nights, if you care to explore this further.
Please understand that we are here to advance our sport, therefore assist everyone one of our members, though we must also abide to our due diligence as your elected Board.

We require a host for the Alberta Provincial Championships 2019

The Alberta Sailing Association is requesting a host for the Alberta Provincial Championships from the 31st of August to the 2nd of September 2019.  If your club is interested in hosting, please get in contact with Stacey Gibb (President) at president@albertasailing.com to discuss the possibilities.  We would like to have our calendar solidified before our next Board meeting, which is the 16th of February, therefore please do so as soon as possible -- much appreciated!

Is your Club/School Hosting an Event?

Please contact us to have your event added to the ASA calendar and request any assistance we can provide to you!  Contact our Sailing Director, Lauri Kalkkinen via email:  info@albertasailing.com
