School council
Resilience comic strip competition
School council led our assemblies this week on our new value of resilience. We thought about how to be resilient, such as getting enough sleep,  trying different solutions to a problem, persevering when something is hard and asking for help from people you trust. Attached is a template for creating a comic strip that shows how we can be resilient in the classroom or playground. Please hand in your designs to your class teacher by Friday 8th February. School Council will pick the winning designs, which will be reproduced and put up in every classroom. Please use template in link below:

The Great Fox Ride 7th - 8th June

Calling all parents, carers and freinds. Having you considered:
  • Riding from London to Southampton and then once (twice) around the Isle of Wight;
  • Or riding once around the Isle of Wight;
  • Or riding  1/2 way round the Isle of Wight.
These are 3 of the options available to help the school raise money for the Federation. 10% of the funds raised will  support the MS charity MonkeySox. www.monkeysox.com We already have 35 staff, parents and friends committed to the ride.  We would really like 50 riders with a target of raising £50,000

We are asking parents, carers and friends to try and raise £1000 for the privilege of be part of this great event. We will split into groups, every group being led by an experienced rider. We will have support vans,  feed stations along the route, spare parts and bikes and even our very own Great Fox Ride jersey and socks. Santini (Italian cycle brand) have very kindly offered to make us a small number of bespoke tops just for the ride. The quality of the jersey is excellent.(See image below)

KENYAN SCHOOLS CHARITY
Rachel Owen (Year 3 teacher at Ashburnham) is a trustee for Harambee schools Kenya, a small charity working in the Rift Valley to empower local communities through education. Rachel is going back out to visit the schools in February and is hoping to take a number of pencil cases to a very remote school that HSK now look after. Stationery is expensive and hard to come by for these schools and it makes a huge difference for each child to have pens and pencils they can use in lessons. She will take the pencil cases out during half term and give them to the children so we would love your support in helping make this a success! If you can fill a pencil case (or several) with some/ any of the items listed below, then please do so before the 8th February. Please ask your child(ren) to bring the pencil cases to Fox and give to their class teacher.

Suggested pencil case items (to include any of the following):

pencils
colouring in pencils
a rubber
a ruler
a handwriting pen
a pencil sharpener

‘Chicken Clicking’ and ‘Troll Stinks’, by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross, are two humorous picture books, predicated on traditional tales,  that have significant on-line safety messages.   ‘Chicken Clicking’ explores the dangers of sharing personal information online, whilst ‘Troll Stinks’ explores online bullying.  These books are helpful starting points to discuss e-safety.   Safer Internet Day 2019  will be celebrated in the UK on Tuesday 5th February, focusing on the theme of: Together for a better internet. The aim of Safer Internet Day is to inspire a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively.

We have always been a fan of this award-winning author-illustrator collaboration. ‘Tadpole’s Promise’ is an earlier title of theirs, which charts the love between a tadpole and a caterpillar.  Caterpillar says, ‘Promise me you’ll never change.”  You may guess what happens next…

Volunteer Readers
"Are you available to read with a child at Fox once a week (for half an hour) to help them develop their reading skills? We are looking for additional readers to help Fox children in Years 1 and 2 with reading and phonics.  You would be supported throughout the scheme. There is training in helping children with phonics for those interested to be held by Miss Clark on Monday 4th February from 3.00 pm to 3.30 pm, at Fox. You will need to have attended the training session in order to start reading with a child and to have an up to date DBS certificate. We do avoid placing readers within their own child's year group.  If interested, please contact Rohan Thornton (Parent Reading Coordinator), email
rohanthornton357@gmail.com or speak to Gerry Johnson (Fox Reading Coordinator), email gerry.johnson@foxprimary.co.uk"
