Hundreds of new concussion lawsuits are reportedly to be filed in a class action representing claims by former student-athletes across all NCAA divisions against the association. Law360's Zagger indicates Raizner Slania LLP will lead the charge & the Southern District of Indiana will be where most of the cases are filed. Per Zagger, "The idea is to have individual complaints filed against the NCAA with a plaintiff to represent a class of former players at a single school." One suit, from former Cameron (DII) student-athlete Mack IV, "Unfortunately, while the NCAA knew about the harmful and devastating effects of these sub-concussive and concussive injuries, it recklessly ignored these facts and failed to implement reasonable concussion management protocols to protect its athletes." More. (link)
American Gaming Association SVP for Public Affairs Slane responds to NCAA Prez Emmert's comments from the Convention on the spread of legalized sports gambling, which he believes will have a "dramatic" impact on the industry & "threaten the integrity of college sports." Slane: "Mr. Emmert is failing to address, or choosing to ignore the decades-old, massive illegal market for sport betting in this country - which includes betting on college athletics - that continues to thrive. Surely the NCAA can't support the status quo. [...] Only by legalizing and regulating this popular American activity can we offer protection to consumers and competitors, ensure that responsible sports wagering is property regulated, and that those laws are enforced." Vermont AD Schulman & Fairfield boss Schlickmann visit with AthleticDirectorU to discuss departmental buy-in to core values, the collaborative effort of implementing guiding principles at a new institution, their methods of reflection at the end of each academic year & more. Schulman: "The challenge all of us deal with in this industry is the balance of living our core values with wanting to win." Schlickmann: "I have to remind myself that it's a marathon and not a sprint, so you have to be measured in terms of how to prioritize what is coming at you. […] When starting something new, collaborative buy-in on the front end goes a long way because it creates a sense of ownership." (link)
NACDA's Mid-Winter event in Marco Island featured - as far as we can tell - CBS Sports headliner Dodd moderating a number of conversations, including one with Paciolan CRO Demots, Cushman & Wakefield's Lawrence, Iowa State AD Pollard & DePaul's Lenti Ponsetto. North Dakota AD Chaves lauded a session with National Football Foundation Prez/CEO Hatchell. Vegas looks to be on the mind of leaders around the nation. More. (link)

The bill brought by a Washington state representative to compensate student-athletes for their name, image & likeness gets push back from university leaders around the state. Washington State Director of State Relations Mulick: "If states are laboratories of democracies, then I hope you understand that we’d rather not be the lab rat. […] We’re concerned that under this bill simply there won’t be any athletes to provide these benefits to and that’s not just hyperbole." Washington's Dacca, who holds the same title, "As institutions, we would be in limbo during whatever time period that would be and very likely be ineligible during that time. That’s what we’re concerned about is that ineligibility and what that would mean for the programs that we have. Certainly if not ineligible, you can imagine what effect that would have on our ability to recruit." The bill could be voted on next week. (link)
More out of Pullman as Washington State Baseball gets the go ahead on its new $10M clubhouse that should open by the Fall of 2020. WSU already has $4M in the bank, another $2.5M set to arrive from donors by September & the remaining $3.5M to be financed by a bond with pledges to be collected over the next five years. Cougars AD Chun: "Upgrading Bailey-Brayton Field was a necessity and provides Marty Lees and his staff the opportunity to attract top talent to Washington State, develop current talent, and return the program to a place of prominence." (linklink)
Texas FB sold out three home games this past season and averaged 97,713 fans for six kicks at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. That's 5.3% better than the 2017 season, when an average of 92,778 Longhorn fans were in attendance. Only Northwestern (22.4%), Cal (17.3%), Pittsburgh (14.9%), Syracuse (9.2%), Louisville (8.9%), Purdue (6.8%) and Arizona (6.6%) had bigger increases year-over-year. UT is one of 22 'Power 5' programs that saw an increase in average attendance. Interestingly, half of the state's 12 FBS programs saw an uptick (UTSA, North Texas, Rice, Texas Tech and TAMU). (link); Deep look here on the success of WBB at South Carolina and how improved attendance averages from 1,800 to 13,239, and, comparatively, how Arizona is trying to leverage the same kind of boosts. The Wildcats are averaging 2,191 this season. (link)
In an interesting change of course, Maryland Prez Loh's planned retirement this summer is now "unlikely." Loh announced his decision in October to step down, but there is no search committee formed for his replacement and WTOP reports Loh has made it known to the Board of Regents he is not ready to retire yet, after all. (link)
Utah AD Harlan camps with KUTV's James for the first of a two-part interview. Harlan notes the "immense support" from the community for the Utes programs and says "supporting Kyle" is the key to a successful football program. Harlan offers the same theory for the success of the basketball programs and says he will work closely with MBB HC Krystkowiak on scheduling. On transfer issues for MBB: "I think it's unfair to label the Ute program any different than anything in college basketball right now... all I know is I like the kids we've got right now. The one's that leave, you wish them the best, and maybe that's best for them." A bit more on the state of facilities, calls the Huntsman Basketball Facility the best in the country and says fundraising is halfway there for the $3M renovation for gymnastics' Dumke Center. Inaugural lacrosse season begins Friday. Tonight's discussion will focus on Commish Scott and the state of the Pac-12, look for it in tomorrow morning's edition of D1.ticker. (link)
Security at Duke's K-Ville has a new look this year after last year's challenges ahead of the North Carolina game. For the Virginia tip this season, with ESPN's College GameDay in town, only students with wristbands for the match-up were allowed into K-ville, which was gated off, and bags were searched. Sophomore Bogle: "The experience was a million times safer and more pleasant. Frankly, students who go to K-Ville before games but are not planning to attend the game don't have a reason to limit their alcohol consumption the way those who will be standing up for four+ hours do." Staff-1 Services Group helps enforce alcohol policies and the school has provided additional ramped up security measures, though Senior Assoc. AD for Facilities, Game Ops and Championships Weiseman notes: "It is not good practice to publicize security plans." (link)
Fox Sports CEO Shanks pretty straightforward on his company's approach post-Disney sale, "FOX has always been aggressive in sports." Shanks goes on to note the importance of NFL programming, a successful Thursday Night Football integration, continuing to learn more about how consumers are engaging with sports gambling content on a state-by-state basis & plans for this summer's Women's World Cup. (link)
Also Noticed: The latest comparative MBB rankings, remember these are updated every afternoon-ish. (link); The Texas A&M Student Senate will put reviving the rivalry FB game against Texas to a student-wide vote next month. (link); Thankfully all members of the Stanford Track & Field team are safe after their charter bus caught fire in Seattle on Friday. The team made it to Washington for the scheduled track invitational with the Huskies, who had extra clothes ready for their Palo Alto rivals in case any of them needed new gear. (link); Three Arizona Republican lawmakers recently proposed a bill to give Native American tribes the "exclusive right to offer sports betting in the state, allowing federally recognized tribes with a tribal-state gaming compact to operate the betting facilities." More: "Tribes would be authorized to operate sports betting at kiosks or similar machines in premises that have a bar license, a beer and wine bar license or a private club license." Entire article seems to be in front of the Law360 paywall. (link); Mobile app TikTok announces a partnership with the NFLPA to add 3D augmented reality stickers of NFL players to TikTok's global platform. SportsManias creates the stickers. (link)
