Democracy for all: 2019 Award & 65th anniversary

It is “everyday” democracy that puts the active participation of all people in politics and community life, online and offline. This aspect of democracy is under great threat. This year’s award will therefore highlight inspiring people and initiatives who bridge the gaps and consider democracy a shared responsibility for all of us rather than a system owned by a few.

The two laureates will be announced on 9 May 2019, Europe Day. The Award will be presented on 2 October 2019 in Amsterdam's Meervaart Theatre, when we also celebrate the foundations' 65th anniversary.

Join the Kick Off Conference on 4 April

On 4 April, we are officially launching the project Cultural and Creative Spaces and Cities with a full-day conference in Brussels. It's for anyone working at the intersection between culture, creativity, innovation, urbanism and social impact.

We believe in a more sustainable future for cities. A future in which the cultural and creative sectors address urban challenges in cooperation with public authorities. During this project, dozens of stakeholders across Europe will explore how participatory governance and commoning practices can create a more sustainable future for Europe.

The conference is fully booked but you can still register for the waiting list. The event is free of charge!

Civitates: Stories of grantees

Earlier on we reported on Civitates - a funds pulled together by sixteen philanthropic foundations committed to protect and expand civil society at a time when the fundamentals of democracy are being challenged like never before. Civitates focuses on two vulnerable areas: the shrinking space for civil society, and public discourse and digitization. We've compiled profiles of the first selected projects for you in our online library.

Culture for Solidarity

This new programme investigates the roots of fragmentation in Europe through an artistic lens. The programme explores, discusses, and creates cultural practices that bring unusual groups of people together. We challenge cultural institutions to rethink their relationship to their audiences, and we inspire people who don’t usually attend institutional cultural activities to become active in the shaping and making of these events. Together, we find new ways of bringing people of different backgrounds together and create something ‘with’ them instead of ‘for’ them.
