We mourn the passing of one of our most loved faculty members, Dr. William Reid. Bill began his UCLA career in 2006, when he matched into our Internal Medicine training program after graduating from the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. He immediately distinguished himself as a compassionate and skilled physician with a preternatural talent for teaching. He received commendation for excellence in Medical Student Teaching during all three years of residency. He led our Resident Medical Jeopardy team to first place at the American College of Physicians, Southern California Meeting in 2007 and a commendable second place at the ACP National Meeting in 2008. Unsurprisingly, he was named UCLA Internal Medicine Program Resident of the Year in 2009 as a Senior. Subsequently, as Hospitalist Faculty and attending physician on the wards at Ronald Reagan, Santa Monica and the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Hospital's he was the most sought-after teacher and mentor. He was awarded the Full-Time faculty teaching award an incredible seven times between 2010 and 2016.

Bill served the Department in many roles as a teacher, direct care attending and as a triage officer in the Reagan Emergency Department before moving to the Northwest Valley in 2016. He assumed the role of Head of the UCLA Hospitalist service at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital and attending physician at Olive View UCLA Medical Center. Bill soon established himself in the North Valley and was nominated for the Physician Excellence Award at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in 2016 and won it in 2018. He was a highly rated and loved attending on the wards at Olive View as well. Bill made significant and lasting contributions to the educational mission of the School of Medicine, the training programs at Ronald Reagan and Olive View. He taught in the Simulation Lab, Problem-Based Learning, Doctoring, Acute Care College, Advanced Diagnostic Skills, Continuity Clerkship, Patient Encounters, the Healers Art, Foundations Week, noon conference, and literally every possible teaching opportunity offered in the residency and school of medicine.

Those of us who had the privilege to know him and work with him remember a selfless, tireless, dedicated, compassionate, sincere and loyal friend and colleague. He had an almost superhuman capacity to care for others and enrich and educate those around him in a warm and endearing way. He hated the limelight and shunned praise and accolades, preferring to quietly retreat to the embrace of the close knit and loving family he cherished so much. 

Bill is survived by his wife Fulvia Reid, his 18-year-old son Byron Daniel Reid, his 9-year-old son Guillermo Reid, and his 5-year-old daughter Eliana Reid and many other family members.

A Memorial Service is being planned in the coming months to honor his memory and details of a memorial fund in his name will be announced soon.

Dr. Soma Wali, MD, MACP, Chair of the Department of Medicine at Olive View-UCLA was profiled in the January edition of the American College of the Physicians ACP Online magazine.

Play 4 Kay Breast Cancer Awareness Game

UCLA Women’s Basketball hosts its 13^th annual Play 4 Kay Breast Cancer Awareness game versus Stanford University. Funds raised at the event will support UCLA breast cancer research and services and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, established in honor of the former North Carolina State University women’s basketball coach, who died of breast cancer after 22 years as a breast cancer survivor.  The Iris Cantor-UCLA Women’s Health Center is a co-sponsor for the game.

The 3^rd Annual Department of Medicine Professional Group (DMPG) Faculty Retreat will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the UCLA Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center at the UCLA campus in Westwood. 

The day will start with a GIM Division meeting, including a panel where faculty will review current and new quality improvement initiatives relevant to primary care and hospitalist practice. The luncheon speaker, Robert M. Wachter, MD, Professor of Medicine, UCSF, is a  practicing hospitalist and internationally known innovator in patient care who will speak on the changing role of the physician in the digital era.  Multiple workshops relevant to clinical practice are available, including BLS and ACLS certification, and MOC, among many others. Childcare and lactation facilities are provided.  A wine and cheese reception will end the day.

2019 David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) Seed Grant Program 

In collaboration with the UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), the DGSOM Research Themes and the IPH will focus the 2019 DGSOM Seed Grant Program on an effort to promote the assembly of new teams of scientists that are well-positioned to perform innovative, high-impact research and ultimately compete for large team science grants from federal agencies and private foundations.

Applications are encouraged from faculty throughout the UCLA campus in any biomedical or medical research area in which groundbreaking advances catalyzed by teams of researchers can be envisioned. Applications that take advantage of the infrastructures established by the IPH and CTSI are especially encouraged, as are applications that span disciplines or span the basic, translational, clinical, and community spectrum.

Stakeholder-Partnered Implementation Research and Innovation Translation (SPIRIT) K12 Program

The Request of Applications (RFA) for the new AHRQ-PCORI K12 program in learning health systems are now open and available online.

This unique new partnership among UCLA, Kaiser Permanente Southern California, VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, and Los Angeles County Department of Health Services will collaboratively support mentored postdoctoral research career development, providing 2-3 years of salary and support for patient-centered outcomes research conducted within learning health systems.
