Sugar is Yummy... Or, is it Yucky?!

"Healthy" foods are all the rage, but dietary trends can be confusing, even with something as simple as sugar. Is it good or bad? It depends on the Glycemic Index, and this week, Chelsea's on the blog to clear the controversy, and share her story, while questioning:

"Sugar-Free" February - What does that mean, exactly?

The food we eat plays a huge role in our mood and manner, and for children, their ability to learn and self-regulate. More than just "what's in it?", "Where does it come from?" and "How was it grown? Packaged? Transported?" are questions leading to one important consideration:

"What impacts do my decisions have on the world around me?" For teachers, the impact is HIGH and affects the future! We have to learn all we can, so we can share!

Discoveries! Recipes! Challenges! Even book reviews! Why not?

And the more we have to share... the more we need a dedicated space to keep it organized. We told you there were website changes in the works, and this week, we're pleased to present the first of them: our new Snacks and Sustainability page at buddings.ca.

Tomomi's most recent blog post also shares a story about the value of sharing, and how her Health is Wealth class has been sharing the lessons: Sharing is the important element of a healthy life

On the web, or in the flesh, sharing is caring, and on Feb. 8, we invite you to Storybook Buddings for an info session about potty training, preschool programs, and planning for the future. Our 2019 campaign for flexible daycare Get Ready for Big Kids Club is getting ready to launch.

We have big plans for February, and it seems like our Healthy Beginnings 2019 are coming together.

Read on for all the info!

Sugar-Free: What does that mean?

Get ready, because we're committed to going "sugar-free" next month!

But hold your horses!

Our bodies need sugar to give us the energy we need for 5 little monkeys jumping on the bed. After a run-in with her doctors a decade ago, Chelsea had to learn the hard way which sugars are safe, and which make you crash. She shares her story on the blog.

"Sugar-free" February is catchier than "Low glycemic index (GI)" month, but it leaves some gaps. Here's what it means at Buddings:

  • Four weeks of am and pm snacks with foods of 55 GI or less
  • A month-long holiday from refined sugars (honey and maple syrup are still on the list, just!)
  • Introducing Yacon syrup, and some other sweeteners for the sweetest of the sweet
  • Balancing glycemics, by choosing complex grains and cereals (not white flour), cooking pasta al dente, and loading up on legumes
  • PLUS! A brand new snack calendar, for you find the menu and make informed snacking selections when you book in.
Even Pancake Monday is in for a savoury shakeup. Stay tuned for all the juicy details.

What's on the Blog?

Book Review: Yummy Yucky

Speaking of snacks, some of our little buddies are still learning that
"blueberries are yummy" and "blue crayons are yucky"
as they discover their likes and dislikes.
Leslie Patricelli's book Yummy Yucky  teaches our little friends all about decision making, and the message of this book is a good reminder for adults as well. That's why Talia loves this book!

If you missed it on Facebook last week, click this link to read Talia's book review!

Big Kids Club: Health is Wealth with Tomomi

Learning how to share toys, space, and unique moments are only a few of the social skills our Big Kids learn during their visits at Buddings.

Tomomi helps the Big Kids Club celebrate these developing skills in her Thursday afternoon classes!
She believes sharing is an act of kindness as it teaches
empathy and compassion.

Click Tomomi's blog to read more! Her class is happening every Thursday at Buddings Broadway from 1 - 4 pm so don't miss out!
