Winter Update

Hello Quilters!
Hard to believe but we are already a full month into 2019. I hope the winter hasn't been too harsh wherever you are.  We have been in Arizona for the first time. Solar panels on the roof of the trailer have allowed us to go off-grid (or boondocking) in the desert. Very interesting experience. I taught at the Lake Havasu Quilters Retreat and then did a demo day and presentation at Copper Canyon Quilting and E2W and Outrigger Shop in Lake Havasu. Yes, they sell fabric and outrigger boats! A wonderful shop if you are ever in the area. Sherri and her team are welcoming and knowledgeable.

Interesting history - the London Bridge (yes the one that was falling down in London England) was moved piece-by-piece to the desert. The bridge was erected - then the canal was dug underneath so now it crosses water to the island beyond. Definitely a must see.
A couple of exciting announcements. First, I have a quilt on the cover of AQ Magazine - March issue. I can scratch that my bucket list! The quilt is titled Me and My Shadow made with Northcott's 10th anniversary Stonehenge Solstice fabric. Kits are available.
Second, we are planning the very first Shortcut Sheet School House. This is a 7 day event in Sebago Lake Maine. Designed to teach the entire Shortcut Sheet methodology so participants can become teachers/distributors in their areas. You can find more information on our website. Or download the brochure.

So here is what you will learn in this Newsletter:
1. Make the panel quilt titled Lattice - an accidental block design surrounding the Song Bird Panel from Northcott.
2. Northcott Stonehenge Ombre has finally arrived. We have yardage of the entire fabric line.
3. Our latest patterns and panel options.
4. The newest Talking Points quilt titled Fractured, uses Northcott's Majestic panel.

About online fabric sales - due to our hectic travel schedule, we don't have access to most of our fabric until we set up for a show. However, we do carry all the Stonehenge fabrics so if you are looking for something, send me an email and I can give you availability and timing.

Read on and enjoy!

Happy Quilting!

Lattice Tutorial
Lattice was an accidental design. It started with a Lemoyne Star block.
- Reduced the number of pieces by making the 2 side HSTs into single Flying Geese units.
- Replace 4 HSTs in the center with a single square.
- Replaced the corner squares to match the star point fabrics.
Voila - a block that doesn't look like a star. The center of a few of the blocks was perfect for the little bird panels.

The pattern is free when you order the panel. We also have kits available.
You are going to make the Flying Geese the Shortcut Sheet way, cutting all 88 units from the same sheet. Start with 4 strips of geese fabric 3-3/4" wide by full width of fabric (WOF) and 4 strips of sky fabric 4-1/2" x WOF.  Tighten up your stitch a little. Sew them together, alternating. Add 1 strip of sky fabric 3" wide on the right. Make sure your 1/4" seam allowance is accurate. Press seams open, straight and flat.

Then cut 11 rows 3-3/4" wide, making sure the vertical lines are straight.
Sew the rows back together by offsetting back and forth to get a pattern of touching corners where the squares meet, and open space where the rectangles meet. Sew a strip of sky fabric 3" wide, on the top and bottom of the sheet.
Cut panel pieces apart. Square corners and trim panel center to 20-1/2” x 26-1/2”. Trim individual bird panels to 6”.

Cut (3) strips of red fabric 3-1/2” wide. Sew around center panel and trim to 24-1/2” x 32-1/2”.

Cut (5) strips of beige fabric 2” wide. Sew around each bird panel and trim to 8-1/2” square.
From (6) strips 2-1/2” wide of beige fabric, cut (88) 2-1/2” squares. From (3) strips 4-1/2” wide of print fabric, cut (22) 4-1/2” squares. Make 22 blocks.

Assemble the quilt and add a final 4-1/2" border of red fabric.

Beautiful Northcott Panels
Here are our latest panels. Whenever possible, we include a free pattern with the panel. And in most cases, these patterns use Shortcut Sheet methods to make the units. Kits (including the panel) to make the free patterns are available.
Dragonfly Moon in 2 colors - 24" x 42", Hockey and Sun Valley 28" x 42".
Koi Pond, Under Sea 3D, Healing Waters and You Had Me At Meow, all 28" x 42"
Our newest Talking Points pattern is called Fractured. It uses Northcott's Majestic panel. Talking Points bocks are made by paper piecing and is used in the 'pointy' blocks on the right and bottom of the panel. Foundation paper is included with the pattern. The effect of all the triangles is from the printed fabric. Kits and patterns are available plus the panel by itself.
