All the Earth is Filled With God's Glory
Dear St. V's,
Spring is not here yet, and today is colder than yesterday. But I share  this image of a wee oak sprout in the sun, inspired by this Sunday's reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. In part, it reminds us of God's people have always seen Creation as a path towards the Holy. Fr. Ray's prayer-poem touches on this. Each week, he closes by asking you to craft your own prayer -poem -- do give this a whirl, and share your words with your Church family.
We always invite parishioners to step out with Bishop Denis Madden and pray for peace at locations in our city that see violence. Parishioner Jack Schmidt has participated in many of these walks. Of these experiences, he writes, "Led by a cross-bearer and Bishop Madden, we sing a hymn to pace our walking..."   Read the rest of Jack's reflection here
Lots to see and do here -- make sure you mark your calendars for the Social Ministry convocation on March 2nd, and read also about how we're working towards a new parish directory. See you at St. Vincent's!

February 3, 2018

…in the words of
Isaiah 6:3

“One [Seraphim] cried out
to the other:
‘Holy, holy, holy
is the LORD of hosts!
All the earth is filled with his glory!’”

…in another’s words,
a prayer-poem –

to think of
1 “holy”
a true wonder

to consider
2 “holies”
beyond imagining

to acknowledge
now
3 “holies”
divinely mysterious

I can’t help myself
becoming myself
a seraf
as I call out
this thrice holy
even as it washes over me
floods my being

[a holy “amen”]

                    Fr.. Ray

Now, in your own words,
a prayer-poem...

A Pastoral Reflection on Racism by Archbishop Lori
The Journey to Racial Justice: Repentance, Healing and Action
"There is a continued urgency to address the issue of racism, especially given the ongoing rise of horrifying incidents of racism, anti-Semitism and intolerance toward newcomers to our country."  Read Archbishop Lori's Pastoral Reflection here.

The Baltimore Sun published an op-ed written by St. Vincent's parishioner Skipp Sanders.
Skipp writes that the Pastoral Reflection "takes ownership for the Catholic Church’s participation in this sin, going all the way back to her early involvement in the institution of slavery. By honestly acknowledging this shameful past and its long-lasting effect on the church and society as a whole, the statement offers hope for understanding the roots of racial division that still plague us today."

A New Parish Directory
St. Vincent is in the early stages of creating a new directory. It will be online and password-protected,  available only to those parishioners who are in it. You will be able to see the directory using Apple, Android, and Kindle Fire devices, as well as your PC. The database structure is provided by Instant Church Directory, a church software company. All changes to the directory can only be made by a St. Vincent Parish administrator. This private Parish directory will not be shared outside the community.

We will email you soon and invite you to submit the information you wish to make available in the St. Vs Parish Directory. No company will be taking formal pictures for this directory. Give St. V’s your favorite picture of yourself, or we can take one. Once we have updated the directory with your information and picture, we will send you the simple instructions to access the directory.

There will be an initial printing of the directory for all participants. However, this directory will always be available on-line to those who choose to download the app. This effort will provide another convenient way for us to be able to contact each other, to get to know people in the parish we don’t know, and to see at a glance and communicate with various committees and Parish Staff.

From St. V's Ad Hoc Committe on Church Reform
The leaders of the world's conferences of Catholic bishops will convene in Rome Feb. 21-24 to discuss the Church's crisis of sexual abuse and its cover-up. In advance of this gathering, St. Vincent's Ad Hoc Committee on Church Reform wrote to the Apostolic Nuncio for the United States, Archbishop Christophe Peirre.
"Pope Francis acknowledged that we are experiencing a twofold crisis, one of abuse and one that shatters credibility. He challenged the bishops to combat both of these crises.  Our leaders cannot be alone in the implementation of this challenge.  Please know the people of God have been confronting these issues . . . we have many gifts and we willingly will continue to help you succeed in promoting reconciliation and healing during this sad and difficult period of church history."

The Ad Hoc Committee is also writing to Archbishop Lori on the upcoming re-convening of an Archdiocesan Pastoral Council, recommending (among other recommendations) that any such council be composed of elected, rather than appointed, members.

From Evasion to Conversion:  How Pope Francis Sees the Sex-Abuse Crisis
"This is how Francis, after a difficult 2018 and above all his own experience of misjudgment and mismanagement in the case of Chile, has come to see the abuse crisis. It is much deeper than it looks, for it involves a turning-away from Christ in his people. And it cannot be repaired merely by procedural or judicial mechanisms, necessary as these are. It will require a radical transformation—a turning-back to Christ."            Commonweal
