La Grange, Texas

Celebrating Fayette County's History

This month we are testing a new format for letting our patrons know about recent happenings and upcoming events in the Museum and Archives. We hope you enjoy it!

Upcoming Events

The Photography of Louis Melcher
Saturday, February 16, 10:30 a.m.
Opening of our latest exhibit on the life and work of Fayette County photographer, Louis Melcher. Former FHMA director, Kathy Carter, will present a program featuring her favorite Louis Melcher photographs, followed by a reception with light refreshments.

Lafayette and the Farewell Tour: Odyssey of an American Idol
Tuesday, March 5th, 6:30 p.m.
With Fayette County named for the French hero of the American Revolution, the Marquis de Lafayette, and La Grange also the name of his home, it seems pertinent that Lafayette scholar, Alan R. Hofmann should present a program based on his book, Lafayette in America in 1824 and 1825: Journal of a Voyage to the United States. For more information see www.lafayetteinamerica.com.

Recent Gifts
J. T. Koenig recently donated a letter found at an online auction house that Nathaniel W. Faison wrote to his brother, Peter, on May 9, 1870. As you can see, Peter wrote on the envelope, "Last letter received from Nathan. To be preserved. P. B. F." In the letter, Nathaniel Faison complained about his poor health and he died the following month.
Among other gifts we have received:
  • Larry Ripper's detailed inventory of the Massadonia Hill Cemetery at Rabb's Prairie, which includes maps and photographs.
  • A map showing the routes of various Spanish expeditions through Central Texas and an accompanying booklet from the Gonzales Historical Commission
  • Reprinted Schulenburg Sticker and newspaper clippings from Gary E. McKee
  • Advertising plate, cinnamon oil bottle, vintage photo, and T-shirts from Second Chance Emporium
  • Giese family WWI and other old family documents
  • A photograph of the Pychola Saloon

These are just two of at least 150 amazing photographs taken by Louis Melcher that will be featured in our upcoming exhibit. We asked whether anyone happened to recognize either of these buildings and were given a few suggestions. Meanwhile, Maria and Rox Ann determined that the exterior photo was taken at the Cedar Maennerchor Hall at O'Quinn, possibly at its dedication in 1912.
Here is another preview from the new Melcher Photography exhibit coming soon to our Museum and Archives. This was the 1918 Confirmation Class of St. Paul Lutheran Church in La Grange.

Katie Janda was able to ID some using the 1920 La Grange Wildcat yearbook:

Top Row: Wilburn Loessin, ?, Herbert Schultz, ?, ?, maybe Milton Schmidt?, Bernhard Speckels, ?.

Bottom Row: maybe Marguerite Schroeder?, Ruth Mensing, Louise Heise, maybe Louise Bollmeyer?, ?, ?, Pastor Robert Heise, Dora Iselt, Meta (Otto) Koester, Norma Beckmann, Hedwig Francke, and Adele “Dela” Schneider.

Thanks, Katie! Others who should be in the photo are Edward Henry Bowman, Adolph Kirsch, Norma Marie Meinen, Herbert August Gerhard Oltmanns, Edwin Wilhelm Schultz, Erna Marie Ella Weber, and Edwin Edison Wildner. Do you recognize any of these people?
These titles were recently added to our Texas Collection. They can't be checked out, but we invite you to come in and read them in the Archives.
