City Council Passes Sign Law: No Fines for 2 Years

In January the NY City Council passed a law to update the code for signs on businesses that will help keep the cost of signage violations under control. The law, also known as the Awnings Act will:
  • Create a 2-year moratorium on new fines for signage
  • Rescind all outstanding signage fines
  • Give businesses that have already paid fines a discount on future signage permits
  • Reduce the fees for signs and awning permits going forward
The bill also requires that City agencies work together to create a new education program that will make sure business owners understand the laws and regulations about signs.

If you currently have a violation and haven’t paid the penalty, you are no longer obligated to do so.

Businesses with outstanding violations have 2 years to resolve the violation without paying a fine. Additionally, according to the new law, the City now has an obligation to help show you how to get your signs into compliance.

If you have an outstanding signage violation, if you have recently paid a signage fine, and/or if you would like more information please contact scott@gatewayjfk.org. GatewayJFK will be happy to guide you through the process and connect you to a City agency that can help.

Traffic Study Underway!

In January, GatewayJFK began working with the engineering firm Philip Habib & Associates (PHA) on Phase 1 in the development of a comprehensive transportation plan.

The plan will look at all of the ways our businesses, employees and residents use the local streets and it will make recommendations on ways we can improve mobility, help traffic congestion, improve safety for pedestrians and vehicular traffic, find solutions to truck circulation and overnight parking, and improve employee and residential parking. In February PHA will be conducting a survey and looking for input from people who live, work, and own a business in the area.

Tree Lighting Brings Together Business & Residential Community.

On Saturday Dec. 22nd 2018 GatewayJFK joined the United Neighbors Civic Assn. and the Spring Jam Civic Assn. to host a tree lighting event at the Burger King at 154-05 Rockaway Blvd. The event was cosponsored by Ruth Settles at Exit Realty All City, JahaiRose.info, and Burger King.

The event drew a crowd of 60 people on a cold and windy day for signing and photos with Santa Claus in his sleigh. Toys were collected and donated to families at local homeless shelters. The event organizers hope this will become an annual tradition for the neighborhood.
