7th Annual Stephen H. Schneider Memorial Lecture with Nainoa Thompson

Nainoa Thompson is a Native Hawaiian navigator and President of the Polynesian Voyaging Society who journeys across the seas without the use of modern technology to bring awareness to the need to care for our planet. Nainoa Thompson will speak at the 7th Annual Stephen H. Schneider Memorial Lecture on his experience as a Pwo navigator and efforts to better care for our shared planet. More info here.

National Interventions to Create Gender Equality in Academic STEM Cultures: What Have We Learned to Impact Future Initiatives?

This talk will discuss diversity programs, their known outcomes, and implications of what has been learned that can inform future initiatives. Among other needs is the importance of expanding the focus on equity in cultures and climates beyond gender to look at intersectionalities such as sexualities, gender identities, race, ethnicity, abilities, socioeconomic/class status, and age that influence gendered experiences in STEM. This series of FREE walks aims to connect our community with the San Lorenzo River. The San Lorenzo River watershed is home to you and me, AND all sorts of birds and bugs, fish and fungus, plants and amphibians. Learn about the wildlife that lives in and along the river during the 3rd Annual Exploring the San Lorenzo River Series! On the second Saturday of each month we will meet at a different location in the San Lorenzo Valley. For this outing, explore redwood ecology, and how the history of our watershed connects us to the world’s tallest trees. More info here.

Panntta Congressional Internship
Application Deadline: February 11, 2019

We have been asked to choose one outstanding undergraduate (junior or senior) student to participate in this extraordinary learning experience. The thirteen-week program runs from the beginning of August through early November. The Congressional Internship begins with a two-week training session at the Panetta Institute followed by eleven weeks in Washington, D.C. More info here.

Monterey Bay Ocean Science REU at CSU Monterey Bay
Application Deadline: February 11, 2019

Undergraduate students will collaborate with mentors at host institutions (CSU Monterey Bay, Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and Naval Postgraduate School) to conduct 10 weeks of independent research. In addition, students complete a suite of professional development workshops and training. A $5,000 stipend, travel, and housing support are provided by the program. More info here.

CSU COAST Summer 2019 Student Internships
Application Deadline: March 4, 2019

CSU COAST will have 16 PAID internship positions in Summer 2019 that cover a broad range of interests including fisheries management, species conservation and protection, ocean data analysis and synthesis, and marine engineering. Internship hosts are state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations and private industry-this is a great way for students to see what it's like to work in these different environments and refine their educational and career goals. Dr. Earl H. Myers and Ethel M. Myers Oceanographic and Marine Biology Trust
Application Deadline: March 11, 2019

Under the terms of the will of Ethel M. Myers, a Trust has been established to award grants for studies in the marine sciences and conservation. The target grantees are graduate students in Master’s and Ph.D. programs. Limited consideration, based on funding available, may be given to undergraduates. All grants shall be made without any obligation of repayment. Most grants have ranged from $1000 - $2000 depending in part on the number of proposals received and funded and the income available to the Trust in the current year. More info here.

SNARL or Valentine Camp Student Grants
Application Deadline: March 15, 2019

Want to do your research at SNARL or Valentine Camp in Mammoth Lakes? 
SNARL and Valentine Camp are part of the UC Natural reserve system. Graduate students planning field research in or around Mammoth Lakes, CA can apply for funding from the NRS's Valentine Eastern Sierra Reserve. The reserve's Graduate Student Grant program offers up to $1,500 in funding for grad students doing work at Valentine Camp Reserve and Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory (SNARL), or who plan to use the reserves as their home base.
