Hola Friends!

This week your shortlist of actions focuses on government funding and the First Amendment trainwreck that is Senate bill S.1.

1. Federal Action: Tell Your MoCs to Hold Strong Against the Wall

Over the next two weeks Congress will negotiate a government funding and border security deal. Our MoCs need to hear that we want them to defend the American principles of justice, inclusion, humanity and fairness and to stand against Republican racism, scapegoating and militarization.

In the upcoming negotiations to fully fund the government for 2019, we want four essential things:
  1. No racist wall.
  2. No additional border security funds from domestic or social safety net budgets. If funding is added it must come from the Homeland Security or Defense budgets.
  3. No cuts or impediments to legal immigration, refugee or asylum programs.
  4. No militarization of our southern border.

Call to Action: Ask your Senators and House Rep to continue standing firm against the wall.

2. Federal Action: Oppose Senate Bill S.1 “Strengthening America’s Security in the Middle East Act”

S.1 is a collection of four hard-line, right-wing bills submitted by Senator Rubio (R-FL) that McConnell & Company were unable to get the previous Senate to pass. Now the Republicans have a larger majority, they are making S.1 their first priority in the hopes of ramming it through. This hawkish and extremist bill will make it far more difficult to negotiate peaceful diplomatic settlements to the long and bloody conflicts that continue to roil the Middle East.

Call to Action: Call Senators Feinstein and Harris to thank them for opposing S.1.

In Case You Missed It

LAST CHANCE: Senate to vote Feb. 5 on William Barr for Attorney General. Call your senators to make it clear that you want them to vote against Barr as AG. He has a long record of pushing for unchecked executive powers.

End the homeless encampment sweeps in San Francisco. Call Mayor Breed and your Supervisor and tell them you oppose this cruel practice.

Put protecting immigrants on the State Legislature’s agenda. Ask Asm. Chiu to introduce state laws that protect Californian undocumented immigrants, including reintroducing SB 28.

Tell the State Assembly to get serious about climate change. Ask Asm. Ting to introduce an oil severance tax to transition to zero-emissions vehicles.

Protect Carbon Dioxide Emission Limits on Power Plants -- Deadline Feb 19, 2019. Please post a comment to the EPA opposing their proposed rule change that would further accelerate climate change and negatively impact public health. Comment link and a sample comment here.

Send Postcards to Voters to GOTV for the TN State Senate Special Election. Republican Mark Norris resigned as Tennessee’s State Senate Majority Leader to accept a federal judgeship. There’s a special election on March 12 and a chance to flip the seat Blue. Four Republicans, but just one Democrat have thrown their hats into the ring. Help mobilize every Democratic voter in the district and flip this seat to Democrat Eric Coleman. Learn more.

NEXT INDIVISIBLE SF GENERAL MEETING -- SUNDAY FEBRUARY 3, 1pm - 3pm. We now meet on the first and third Sundays of each month from 1 to 3pm at the Women’s Building, Room A (3543 18th Street, between Valencia and Guerrero). RSVP here.

Tuesday, January 29, 6:30-8:30pm: Sunrise Movement General Meeting at the Sierra Club in Oakland (2101 Webster St #1300). The Sunrise Movement is leading the charge on the Green New Deal. Join their January general meeting. RSVP here.

Friday, February 1, 7pm: Howard Schultz (former Starbucks CEO) Book Tour Protest at the Jewish Community Center (3200 California Street). Ask Billionaire Howard Schultz to run as a Democrat or not at all. If he runs as an Independent, he will split the liberal vote and potentially hand the election to Trump in 2020. Join Indivisible WA’s call to protest outside each of Schultz’s book tour stops. More details about the event and tickets here.

Wednesday, February 6, 10:00am-noon: Our City, Our Home ERAF Budget Hearing at San Francisco City Hall. The City recently discovered $185 million in extra funding from the Educational Revenue Augmentation Fund. Join the Our City, Our Home Coalition and ask San Francisco’s Budget & Finance Committee to use some of this windfall to go towards housing and homelessness. RSVP here.

Indivisible SF Deep Dive
San Francisco may soon expand involuntary conservatorship, and Indivisible SF opposes the current proposal. We've written a letter to Mayor Breed expressing our opposition to the proposed ordinance, and our support for the opposition coalition led by Seniors and Disability Action. Read it here.
