SPORTS ROUND UP
In recent sports news, the 1st VII had their first Rugby Sevens tournament last Sunday at Millfield School, coming out victorious against Bryanston and Exeter Schools. During the same weekend our Hockey teams had a competitive set of matches against King Edwards, Bath, the pick of which was the U14A team with stand-out performances from Archie Smellie and Leo Matthews. STUDENT RETREATS
On 29th and 30th January, the Fifth Form had their overnight retreat at various different retreat centres across the South West. The theme of the retreat was 'Prayer', with students following the Clifton Diocese’s three year programme A Future full of Hope. Click here to read more.

CARDIFF ART TRIP
Last week Fourth and Lower Sixth Form artists went on a study visit to the National Museum Cardiff. The Museum contains an amazing collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionists paintings including works by Monet, Renoir and Van Gogh. Students managed to fit a great deal into the day, returning to School enriched with creative ideas. Click here to read more.

HORATIO'S GARDEN
Developed by leading garden designers, Horatio’s Garden creates and cares for beautiful accessible gardens in NHS spinal injury centres for patients and their families and friends. Downside pupils have been involved in raising funds for the charity, and this month Ms Ball and Mr Walters presented a cheque to the charity to help them in their work. VOICES FROM THE CLOISTER
Yesterday Downside Abbey launched their new pop-up exhibition series, Voices from the Cloister. This fascinating series showcases some of the outstanding medieval manuscripts, vestments and reliquaries of great historic importance from the Abbey Archives and Library. TEN TORS
Some of our pupils have started their gruelling Ten Tors training for this year's challenge, an event that is organised by the Army’s Headquarters South West and aimed solely at young people. Earlier this month Downside pupils spent a day exploring Dartmoor, covering a distance of 16km and taking charge of the majority of the map reading, whilst working on their fitness levels. SLEEP OUT FUNDRAISER
Last weekend nine pupils and two staff braved the winter wind, rain and cold to sleep outside in the theatre quad for Emmaus House Bristol, raising awareness about homelessness. To date, Downside has raised nearly £2,000 for the charity. Click here to read more.

SOUND AND FURY
This week Downside Third and Fourth Formers took part in a rapid-fire version of Macbeth, with the help of visiting theatre company BoxClever. From the start, it was clear that this was going to be dynamic and thrilling version: actors dressed in black, a minimalist stage aesthetic and the emergence of characters from within the audience. NETBALL TOURNAMENT
Last Saturday eight teams of Downside mothers and daughters braved the blustery wintry weather for the inaugural Mothers & Daughters Netball Tournament. The mothers team played all of the girls teams and, despite not winning the tournament, the mothers produced some excellent shooting and expressed how enjoyable it was to be back on court. CRICKET NEWS
We are sad to be saying farewell to Alfonso Thomas, our Head of Cricket Development. I am sure you will join me in congratulating him on his appointment to the position of Assistant First Team Coach for Hampshire County Cricket Club. All at Downside would like to thank him for the contribution he has made to sport development at Downside and we wish him every success for the future.
