The NHS Long Term Plan, published earlier this month, places a clear emphasis on research and innovation for patient benefit, and in my latest blog I consider five key opportunities the plan provides and the role we’ll play in supporting its delivery.
I’m also delighted to let you know about some new initiatives to support innovation and improvement. Our new innovation adoption fund for patient safety is now open for applications, we’re giving partners another opportunity to pilot ImproveWell (an app to engage staff in quality improvement) and we’re continuing to run briefings for innovators with products that could benefit patients and the NHS.

Of course, the path to adopting new technologies and changing practices is often far from simple, but there are fantastic examples of success we can learn from. A new blog from our Programme Chair for Eyes and Vision, Professor Sir Peng Khaw reflects on the need to harness innovation in the right way to reduce health inequities and address the rising demand for healthcare.

Innovation spotlight

A monthly spotlight on innovations addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing our NHS.

This month we're highlighting an innovation that will help patients avoid long waiting times for treatment for minor injuries.

The innovation, WaitLess is a mobile app that will help patients make an informed decision about where to get the quickest access to minor injuries care with the combined shortest waiting and travel time. WaitLess uses geolocation and Google mapping to direct patients to the site identified in the fastest time. The innovation benefits both patient and healthcare providers as it helps to prevent  inappropriate attendance at A&E, easing pressure on acute health and care services.

WaitLess is supported by DigitalHealth.London’s Accelerator programme.

Find out more about WaitLess in this video from the NHS70 Innovation series.
