GARE Members: Build your skills at the 2019 Annual Meeting!

The 2019 GARE Membership Meeting is in Albuquerque April 16 to 18. This annual event is open only to members, so if your jurisdiction has been considering joining GARE, now is an opportune time. If you aren’t a member, there will be opportunities to participate in workshops on April 16th. We are pleased to announce the latest, a new special workshop from the National League of Cities:

Advancing Racial Equity in Local Justice Reform Initiatives

A workshop for elected officials, judges, law enforcement leadership, and local leadership with interface and decision making authority regarding criminal justice related policy, practice, procedure, or initiatives.

Building upon a foundational understanding of the Government Alliance on Race and Equity framework, this workshop, will enable participants to explore the opportunities, challenges, and best practices for advancing racial equity through criminal justice focused policies, practices and initiatives. Specialists from National League of Cities Race, Equity, and Leadership (REAL) and Justice Reform and Youth Engagement teams will navigate you through case studies of what municipal governments can do, at varying levels of intervention, to reduce criminal justice system interactions overall and support racially equitable outcomes within these efforts.

Additional Pre-meeting workshops

In addition to the Advancing Racial Equity in Local Justice Reform Initiatives pre-meeting workshop, GARE is happy to host a variety of pre-meeting workshops designed to help our participants advance racial equity (these workshops are open to people who are not participating in the membership meeting): **Participants must complete requisite trainings before registration.

Member Update

Race Forward recently launched the Racial Equity Core Team guide, which provides jurisdictions and organizations with the tools and strategies to establish and scale a cross-departmental Core Team. As a special GARE Webinar, Terry Keleher, Director of Strategic Innovation of Race Forward, and Gordon Goodwin, GARE Midwest Region Project Manager, spoke with three GARE Members featured in the guide who have successfully convened Racial Equity Core Teams in their jurisdictions. The discussion highlighted the successes and unique challenges of several teams working to implement their organizational racial equity plans, including Kimberlee Archie (Director, Office of Equity & Inclusion, City of Asheville, NC), Lisa Ramadhar and Nannette Blaize (New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene), and Matias Valenzuela (Director of the Office of Equity and Social Justice, King County, WA).
