iNaturalist and the City Nature Challenge

"Cities around the world will be competing to see who can make the most observations of nature, find the most species, and engage the most people in the 2019 City Nature Challenge."  Austin is a participating city.

March 2nd from 5-7pm, BCF Vice President Rachel McGill will be leading a community hike, focusing on how to use iNaturalist ahead of the City Nature Challenge. Participants will meet at the parking lot located where Lakewood meets 360, and will be hiking next to the creek, so be prepared to get a little wet. Registration and details can be found, here. Come out and explore Bull Creek with us!

Taking Part in the City Nature Challenge is Easy.

  • Find Wildlife: It can be any plant, animal, fungi, slime mold, or any other evidence of life (scat, fur, tracks, shells, carcasses!).
  • Take a Picture of What you Find.
  • Be sure to note the location of the critter or plant.
  • Share Your Observations by uploading your findings through iNaturalist.
iNaturalist is a crowdsourced, species identification system and an organism occurrence recording tool. You can use it to record your own observations, get help with identifications, collaborate with others to collect this kind of information for a common purpose, or access the observational data collected by iNaturalist users.

The 2019 City Nature Challenge will take place in two parts:

April 26th - 29th: Taking pictures of wild plants and animals
April 30th - May 5th: Identifying what was found
