Southern Mallee PCP E-Bulletin February 2019
Here we are half way into February 2019 already!  The Southern Mallee Primary Care Partnership Team, Bronwyn, Eden and Alicia, are looking forward to a busy and progressive year of work together with our partners across Buloke, Gannawarra and Swan Hill.  It has been an exciting start with the Buloke United Walk being announced as Buloke Community Event of the Year for 2018.  A wonderful example of working together on a community issue that can be uncomfortable to front but as a collective we can talk about it.

Check out our new E-Bulletin feature 'Let's Talk Gender Equality!' below. If you, or someone else, are doing great things in relation to gender equality across the Southern Mallee, let us know and you could be featured in our next E-Bulletin!

Also have a look in the Opportunities section to let us know how we're doing and to help us make our communication more valuable to you - we would love to hear your feedback!

We look forward to a progressive year together.

Buloke United Walk A Winner
We are very proud to announce the Buloke United Walk was awarded the 2018 'Community Event of the Year' at the Buloke Shire Council's Australia Day Awards!
The Buloke United Walk was held on 25 November 2018 to launch the 16 Days of Activism campaign in the Buloke Shire.  At 10am in each of the ten towns, community members joined in a united walk to raise awareness and help stamp out family violence. The event was a huge success with over 250 community members attending across the Shire.

Thank you to our event partners; Birchip Business and Learning Centre, Wycheproof Community Resource Centre, Sea Lake Neighbourhood House, Donald Community Centre and the Youth Groups of Charlton, Wycheproof, Sea Lake and Birchip.
Congratulations to all involved!
Let's Talk Gender Equality!
This is a new feature in the SMPCP E-Bulletin, which will focus on local people across the Southern Mallee talking about gender equality. Send in your ideas on people, places, groups or activities that you would like to see featured in this section to administration@smpcp.com.au. Check out our first chat with Chantel Emonson below.

Chantel Emonson - AFLW

Chantel Emonson is a Buloke local, growing up on her family farm near Berriwillock. Chantel grew up playing a lot of sport including football and cricket, representing Victoria from 2007-2010 in under15, 17 & 18 state cricket teams.  In 2018, after finishing a degree in Occupational Therapy, after a twelve year break Chantel returned to football playing with Casey Demons in the Victorian Football League Women's competition and in September was signed by the Melbourne Football Club as a Category B rookie to play in the 2019 AFLW season.  Playing in the backline for the Demons, Chantel has had a strong start to the season and is enjoying every opportunity that comes along and is still pinching herself that she is living out her dream of playing AFL.

 1. How did you get involved in football?

I’ve always had an interest in football, enjoyed watching it on television and at the local footy.  I played auskick growing up as a kid, I also got involved just kicking the footy and playing with the boys at school. Then I played mini's (U13s) at halftime seniors until I was too old to continue playing with the boys.

2. How have you been impacted by gender stereotypes playing football?

I was unable to play football beyond the age of 13 due to the rulings of girls playing with boys and there being no other current pathways in the community or region.  Being the only girl playing football in the league (and likely the region) it was just expected that when I became too old that was it and  I would head back over to netball to play the ‘female’ sport.  I think people still continue to use stereotypical comments regarding females playing a ‘males’ game and feel the need to highlight the differences between the games.

3. What would you say to other people wanting to be involved in women’s football (or other male dominated sports)?

Give it a go. Regardless of what others say there will always be people who have negative comments towards being involved but if its your passion follow it. You never know where it may take you or the opportunities that may arise.

4. How do you think living in a rural area impacts opportunities in relation to gender?

It definitely restricts the opportunities to participate in male dominated sports.  Being in rural areas there aren’t as many females and sometimes the only option is to participate with the males, which takes a lot of confidence and of course there are limited opportunities to compete competitively or just for fun.   However I see this as somewhat of a positive as it provided me with the opportunity to play footy with the boys as a kid, something that definitely helped to improved my skills, which may not have happened if i were in a metro area as they may not have been as accepting for females to join the boys.
