It was fantastic to attend this year's Destination Australia conference in Brisbane. Great to hear from the Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment - Simon Birmingham and some truly inspiring guest speakers. Huge congratulations to John O'Sullivan and his team from Tourism Australia for delivering an outstanding event!

Huge congratulations to Kylie Schurmann and the team at Royal Mail Hotel for securing a Bronze Award for Tourism Restaurants and Catering Services this month at the annual Qantas Australian Tourism Awards held in Launceston, Tasmania.

The Grampians Grape Escape is on again in just over one month! On 4 & 5 May Victoria's longest running food and wine event will be celebrating the amazing wines and spectacular local produce of our region. The festival will provide opportunities to learn trade secrets from guest chefs, taste award-winning wines, participate in masterclasses and keep the little foodies amused. Look forward to seeing you there!

Grampians Tourism have joined forces with Visit Ballarat & Sovereign Hill and secured funding from RDV to deliver a Ballarat & Grampians Visitor Economy Skills Audit, Gap Analysis & Strategy. This month we co-ordinated four partner workshops across the region with the vision to identify both the needs and develop the strategy to guide workforce capability and business capacity development across the Grampians Visitor Economy.

We are currently finalising the new 2019/20 Grampians Official Visitors Guide and I’m happy to advise that industry participation is up 50% on the previous year, strengthening our commitment to continue delivering this 64 - page comprehensive guide to promote our magnificent region.

I will be attending the Australian Tourism Exchange 2019 in Perth from the 8 to 12 April representing Great Southern Tourism Route (GSTR) and our region and I look forward to catching up with friends and tourism partners from across the globe.

WHAT TO DO IN DUNKELD, VICTORIA
A LOCAL GEM AT THE TIP OF THE GRAMPIANS

Featuring Grampians Tourism partners Royal Mail Hotel

"A quarter of a million tourists and rising visit Dunkeld each year. They come for festivals and markets, for runs, racing and a rodeo, to eat, drink, hike or simply to contemplate. What stays with them is the thing locals love about their gem at the southern tip of the Grampians – a very Australian beauty which, like the three mountain peaks that frame the town, reveals a little more of itself with each and every glance."

INVEST IN THE GRAMPIANS

There are not many businesses where you can wake up and play with meerkats and dingoes in the morning, but that opportunity awaits the next owner of Halls Gap Zoo.

After 12 years at the helm, owners Yvonne and Greg Culell are selling the property in order to spend more time with their grandchildren.

The multi-award winning zoo is home to more than 160 species of mammals, reptiles and birds, including the recently acquired star attraction, a rhinoceros. All the animals are included in the sale...

TOURISM AUSTRALIA AUSSIE SPECIALIST AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

This month it was fantastic to welcome Nic Cooper - Visit Victoria, Cari Marotta - Tourism Australia Canada & international participants in the Tourism Australia Aussie Specialist Ambassador program.

UK Ambassador - Matthew Doidge
Canada Ambassador - Marsha Ramage
Indonesian Ambassador - Panji Pramana

Why is the international market important for the Grampians?

1. Inbound tourism allows you to diversify your markets and access new areas of business that may balance out regular domestic business patterns.
2. International travel patterns are not focused around weekends and may level out seasonality
3. Spreading risk across a range of international markets can minimise the impact of any changes in the domestic market
4. International travellers provide a higher yield and spend, on average, 3 times more than domestic travellers on each trip
5. Booking lead times are usually longer, allowing better business planning

MARCH 2019

The Grampians Peaks Trail will be a world-class walking experience of 160km that can be experienced in sections, or as one 13 day journey.

Works are progressing well for a spring public opening of the north and southern experiences with. Tracks currently being cleared. In the north, we have cleared 97 per cent between Roses Gap and Mount Difficult with only 700m to go – but they are the toughest. Between Wartook and Halls Gap we’ve cleared 30% and clearing is complete between Mount Difficult and Wartook. In the South, we have cleared 60 per cent between Mount Abrupt and Dunkeld.

We are in the process of recruiting Gariwerd Traditional Owners to guide visitors on a three day, two night facilitated experience in the north   The Edge of Gariwerd - opening later this year. Gariwerd Rangers will help visitors to experience Country through their eyes. They’ll share cultural knowledge, including the importance of rock art and caring for Country.

Check www.grampianspeakstrail.com.au for trail details and www.parks.vic.gov.au for Grampians National Park access updates.
