CREATIVE WOLLONGONG
In 2018, you shared your ideas for a Creative Wollongong.  Amongst many great ideas,
we heard that you want to see more:
Opportunities for artist development
Increased creative workshops and activities
A stronger connection with local Aboriginal culture and heritage

So we’re building on our existing programs and focusing the ways we can support participation in the arts.
Here are a few of the ways we’re doing just that in 2019.

BOTANIC GARDENS MT KEIRA COMMUNITY DAY

Last Saturday the 23rd Feb, The Botanic Gardens partnered with the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council and Rotary Club Wollongong to offer the following events:
 
Local Aboriginal Stories
Local Indigenous representatives shared stories of Mt Keira’s traditional and cultural heritage, as well as some local bush medicine and bush tucker traditions. Participants heard amazing local dreamtime stories and the relationships between the five islands, the sea, the mountains and the lake.
 
Mt Keira Bushwalk
A number of family friendly guided bushwalks exploring the Mt Keira Summit Park’s landscape and heritage. The walks were led by an experienced guide from The Botanic Garden and attendees heard about the site’s history  and discovered beautiful local flora and fauna.

Sculpture in the Garden 2020

Entries are now open for the biennial Sculpture in the Garden and the Wollongong Acquisitive Sculpture Award 2020, a $30,000 acquisitive award for sculpture. Exhibition will run over 8 weeks in the Wollongong Botanic Garden from 4 April 2020 – 31 May 2020.

SMALL CULTURAL GRANTS 2019 - 2020

Established in 1998, our Small Cultural Grants program supports a diverse range of activities that enrich the cultural life of our area, and promote community participation in cultural activities. This program is open to individual and not-for-profit community groups in the local cultural industry, including music, performing arts, visual arts, crafts and other cultural initiatives. Those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are encouraged to apply.  Please visit Wollongong City Council website for more details regarding these grants, information sessions and application form.
RENEW Wollongong
Expressions of Interest Now Open
Renew Wollongong invites expressions of interest from creative business enterprises, makers, creators, artists, and social enterprises to bring their ideas to life in a retail or office setting, completely rent-free.

Renew Wollongong is working with local agents to utilise empty commercial spaces on Crown Street to bring vibrancy, and foot traffic to the area.
