Small Town Reinvention Workshop, Kimba

COST: $135 (inc. GST) includes Sundowner, all refreshment breaks and printed resources.
*For any resident of the District of Kimba, participation will be free, and funded by the ‘Creating Conversation for Kimba’ Project. Please register at the Council Office of the District of Kimba. Option exists for Kimba residents to attend all day, or only for specific events like the ‘Opening with Tom O’Toole’ and/or Rural Tourism Sundowner.
This one-day interactive Workshop features as presenters and facilitators, a group of small town community builders who have activated positive community and economic change across rural and remote Australia. It is a unique opportunity to hear stories of, and lessons of small town success across the globe; network with other small town residents and community builders; and gain insight into a range of practical processes and tools that could be applied in your town. Above all, it will be a day of inspiration about what is possible.
Program:
9.00am – ‘Start the Day with Tom O’Toole‘ – the famous Beechworth Baker who has created Australia’s biggest turnover bakery in Australia in a small town on ‘a road to nowhere’, three hours from Melbourne. Tom is often referred to as “John Cleese on Steroids!’
10.15am – Refreshments, Conversations and Networking
10.35am – ‘Engaging Young People as Co-designers and Co-leaders in Creating Positive Futures in Rural Australia’ –presented by Rhys Williams, founder of The Makers youth initiative in Mandurah (WA) and currently the youngest Mayor in Australia.
11.30am – ‘Clues to Building Vibrant, Sustainable and Enterprising Small Towns’ – presented by Peter Kenyon, a social entrepreneur who has worked with over 1500 rural communities across Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA and Southern Africa.
12.40pm – Lunch, Conversations and Networking
1.45pm – ‘Useful Practical Tools for Rural Community Builders’– an opportunity to discover a range of tools and processes for engaging and retaining local residents in action; and mapping local assets – facilitated by Peter Kenyon and Rhys Williams.

5.15pm – Rural Tourism Sundowner (wine, beer and nibbles) with Judy and Mark Evans telling their story of small town tourism success; Paronella Park, Queensland – Australia’s most awarded rural tourism attraction occurring in the small town of Meena Creek, Queensland, population -250 persons – Paronella Park employs 80 persons
