CHUMASH

Parshas Tetzaveh - Shlishi with Rashi

Today we will learn how Hashem tells Moshe Rabbeinu to make the rest of the Kohanim’s special clothes!

The Kohen Gadol should wear a special robe, called a Me’il. It should be made out of turquoise wool (that’s like a light blue color). It needs to have a special kind of neck so it doesn’t tear — we’re not allowed to tear the clothes of the Kohen Gadol!

On the bottom of the Me’il there are colorful woolen balls shaped like pomegranates, and gold bells between them. (There were 72 pomegranates and 72 bells around the bottom of the Me’il!)

The Kohen Gadol will wear these special clothes when he goes to do his avodah in the Mishkan or Beis Hamikdash. The bells will ring, and people will hear that the Kohen Gadol is coming.

The Kohen Gadol should also wear a special sign on his forehead, called a Tzitz. It is like a flat rectangle made of gold, that has the words “Kadosh LaHashem” (holy to Hashem) written on it in a way that the letters stick out.

The Tzitz should have strings that match the Me’il to keep it on the Kohen Gadol’s forehead, under where the Tefillin go. When the Kohen Gadol wears it, it will make Hashem forgive the Yidden for any aveiros they did with bringing korbanos the wrong way.

The Kohen Gadol will also need a Kesones, a long shirt; a Mitznefes, a round hat, and an Avnet, a belt to wear around the Kesones.

A regular kohen, a Kohen Hedyot, will have a Kesones like the Kohen Gadol, with an Avnet for his kesones too. He should have a different kind of hat, though, called a Migba’as.

Moshe should dress the Kohanim himself, to start them in their holy Avodah.

All of the Kohanim, and the Kohen Gadol too, should have a pair of short pants to wear so they are Tzniusdik.

All of these things should be worn every time a Kohen works in the Mishkan. To go do the Avodah without the special clothes is a big Aveira!

TEHILLIM

39 - 43

In today’s Tehillim there is a posuk that says, “Ach Betzelem Yis’halech Ish. “A person walks in the dark (because only Hashem knows the way things really are).

In a maamar ,the Rebbe Rashab explains this posuk in another way! “Ach BeTzelem Yis’halech Ish” — a person goes with Tzelem, with a koach called “tzelem” that helps a Yid in his Avodas Hashem.

Every morning, when we wake up, Hashem puts a special koach in the air! It makes us excited about starting the day right and acting the way Hashem wants.

We all sometimes need a push to get us started in doing the right thing!

A thought can come into our mind and get us excited to do something good. This could be from a Bas Kol, a voice from Hashem that the neshama hears, that makes it really want to act the way Hashem wants. Even though we can’t hear it, our neshama does, and it puts thoughts into our head that can make us do Teshuvah!

All this is part of the Tzelem that the posuk is talking about, the hidden koach that goes with a Yid and inspires him to do what’s right!

TANYA

Likutei Amarim Perek Chof-Zayin

We get so many good things from doing iskafya, that it’s worth LOOKING for times to do it more!

Lots of times, our Nefesh Habehamis says “I want that! I’m even allowed to have it! I want it right now!” With Iskafya, we can say, “Yes, it’s a good thing that you want, but we need to remember that Hashem is in charge, so we’re going to wait a minute before we have it. We can’t do what we want, when we want, and how we want. We will think about Hashem first.”

When we think about Hashem in those times, we are making ourselves holy! We are doing a mitzvah called “Vehiskadishtem” — that Yidden should be holy. And not only did YOU make yourself more holy, Hashem makes you more holy too, and takes away a little bit of your Yetzer Hara’s koach!

Even though we just wait a little bit, Hashem has so much nachas, He helps us A LOT, by making our Yetzer Hara weaker! What an AMAZING (and not too hard!) way to accomplish so much in the war with our Yetzer Hara, a little bit at a time!

One time, a Chossid came to the Rebbe Maharash. He said that he did a certain aveira, and wanted a way to do Teshuvah. The Rebbe Maharash told him he needs to fast HUNDREDS of times!

The Chossid was surprised that the Rebbe Maharash would say something like that. So the Rebbe Maharash continued right away: “Do you think that fasting means not eating from sunrise until Shkiah? That’s called going on a diet. What I meant by fasting is that you shouldn’t do the things you want to — close your eyes when you see something you shouldn’t be looking at, and close your mouth when you shouldn’t be saying something. That’s the fasting that I’m talking about, that will be a good Teshuvah and bring you closer to Hashem!”

Can you think of some ways to have Iskafya? Maybe you can say some of the pesukim before you play on the computer, or read your emails, or think about how to make someone else happy before you eat dessert.

HAYOM YOM

Zayin Adar Alef

We know that we are shluchim of Hashem. On Hey Adar, we learned part of our shlichus, which is to make the world tahor with words of Torah and Tefillah. Today we learn another part of our shlichus — to make the world bright with the light of Torah and Avodah!

Hashem made us His shluchim in the world — to make the world bright with Torah and mitzvos. How do we do this? By doing mitzvos and having good midos.

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Mitzvas Lo Saasei #89, Asei #39, #29, Lo Saasei #81, Asei #30

1) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #89) We are not allowed to bring a korban onto a Mizbeiach anywhere except in the Beis Hamikdash. This is called “Maaleh Bachutz,” and is a separate mitzvah than what we learned yesterday about not shechting a korban outside of the Beis Hamikdash.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Reeh: הִשָּׁמֶר לְךָ פֶּן תַּעֲלֶה עֹלֹתֶיךָ בְּכָל מָקוֹם אֲשֶׁר תִּרְאֶה

The details are explained in Perek Yud-Gimmel of Mesechta Zevachim.

2) (Mitzvas Asei #39) Every single day, we need to bring the Korban Tomid — once in the morning and once in the afternoon.

This mitzvah comes from a posuk in Parshas Pinchas (it’s also in Korbanos that we say every day in davening!): שְׁנַיִם לַיּוֹם עֹלָה תָמִיד

The halachos are explained in Perek Beis of Mesechta Yoma, and in Mesechta Tamid.

3) (Mitzvas Asei #29) We need to make sure that the fire on the Mizbeiach burns all the time! We put more wood on the Mizbeiach in the morning and in the afternoon.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Tzav, that we also say in davening! אֵשׁ תָּמִיד תּוּקַד עַל הַמִּזְבֵּחַ לֹא תִכְבֶּה

4) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #81) It is asur to let the fire on the Mizbeiach go out, or even to put out just one part of it!

This mitzvah comes from the same posuk — אֵשׁ תָּמִיד תּוּקַד עַל הַמִּזְבֵּחַ לֹא תִכְבֶּה

The details of this mitzvah are explained in Perek Yud of Mesechta Zevachim.

5) (Mitzvas Asei #30) The kohanim should take off the ashes from the Mizbeiach every day. This is called Terumas Hadeshen.

We learn this mitzvah from a different posuk in Parshas Tzav, which is also part of Korbanos: וְלָבַשׁ הַכֹּהֵן מִדּוֹ בַד וּמִכְנְסֵי בַד וְגוֹ׳ וְהֵרִים אֶת הַדֶּשֶׁן

The halachos are explained in Mesechta Tamid and Mesechta Kipurim.

RAMBAM

Hilchos Maaseh HaKorbanos - Temidin U'Musafin

In today’s Rambam, we finish learning about the types of korbanos and how they are brought, and start to learn the halachos of the korbanos we bring regularly, the ones for every day and the special ones for Shabbos and Yom Tov.

Perek Yud-Tes: We learn the halachos about the first mitzvah in today’s Sefer Hamitzvos — if someone brings a korban outside of the Beis Hamikdash. We learn that a goy IS allowed to bring a korban outside of the Beis Hamikdash.

Perek Alef: Now we start learning Hilchos Temidin Umusafin! The first perek is about the Korban Tomid, the korban that we bring EVERY day. No other korbanos should be brought BEFORE the morning one, and no other Korbanos (except the Korban Pesach) can be brought AFTER the afternoon one. If chas veshalom the morning Tomid was missed, we should bring the afternoon one — unless it’s the first time we’re using that Mizbeiach (like if Moshiach comes in the afternoon!)

Perek Beis: We learn the halachos of the last three mitzvos of today’s Sefer Hamitzvos, about how to make sure that the fire on the Mizbeiach burns ALL the time, and about the Terumas Hadeshen.

Now we start learning a new set of halachos, about what makes korbanos posul:

One example of how a korban can become posul is if even a part of the animal was outside of the Azara when it was shechted.

DARKEI HACHASSIDUS

Zayin Adar

Today is Zayin Adar, the birthday and Yartzeit of Moshe Rabbeinu! (It is brought in Hayom Yom Chelek Sheini that the Rebbeim would not say Tachanun on Zayin Adar, however Chassidim do.)

There is an argument in seforim whether Zayin Adar should be marked in Adar Alef or in Adar Beis. In a sicha from Zayin Adar 5752, the Rebbe said that there’s room to use BOTH days for the inyan of Zayin Adar.

At a farbrengen in Tof-Shin-Mem-Vov, Erev Zayin Adar, the Rebbe explained why in the past Chassidim didn’t do anything special for Zayin Adar. Zayin Adar is spoken about in the end of Shulchan Aruch, where it brings the minhag that some people fast on Zayin Adar. Since the Alter Rebbe taught us not to fast unless we need to, Chassidim never really took on that minhag, and Zayin Adar wasn’t treated as a special day.

One of the shuls in Crown Heights is called “Ahavas Moshe.” That night, they were going to have a Melaveh Malka to raise money for the shul. In honor of the Melaveh Malka, they printed a booklet with sichos about how the Rebbe wants the Chassidim to support the shechunah of Crown Heights — but even though the Melaveh Malka was going to be on Zayin Adar, and the name of the shul is Ahavas Moshe, it didn’t say anything about Moshe Rabbeinu!

The Rebbe said that they should speak about how the Melaveh Malka is happening on such a special date, the birthday and yartzeit of Moshe Rabbeinu!

The Rebbe said that even though in the past Chassidim might not have made a big deal about Zayin Adar, now we are in a very dark part of Golus. We need to use every chance we can to add a chayus in Kedusha!

TEFILLAH

Va'anachnu Lo Neida

After we finish the first three sections of Tachanun (Vidui, Yud-Gimmel Midos, and Nefilas Apayim), when it is not Monday and Thursday, we say Va’anachnu Lo Neida.

First we say four lines of Avinu Malkeinu. (We say the whole Avinu Malkeinu only on fast days and during the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah.)

Then we say “Va’anachnu Lo Neida Ma Naaseh” — “We don’t know what to do.”

What kind of tefillah is that?

When Moshe Rabbeinu went up on Har Sinai to ask Hashem to forgive the Yidden, he tried asking in many different ways. He asked standing, sitting, and when falling on his face. Now that we have also asked Hashem in all of these ways (standing during Shemoneh Esrei, sitting during Pesukei Dezimra, and falling on our face with Nefilas Apayim), we tell Hashem that we don’t know what else to do!

We ask Hashem to please have Rachmonus on us anyway. Hashem should remember His kindness, and remember that we are just people that aren’t perfect.

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

The Yesod of Shulchan Aruch

One of the hardest parts of keeping all of the halachos of Torah is being different from other people.

The Medrashim say that starting from the very moment of Matan Torah, the Goyim were already laughing at the Yidden for keeping all of the mitzvos. The same is true today, that people laugh at us or criticize us for following what Hashem asks us to do.

That is why the beginning of the whole Shulchan Aruch is what Yehudah ben Teima says: “Be bold like a leopard!” That means not to be embarrassed by what other people think. By keeping the mitzvos, we WILL look different than others. They might laugh at us, and say that we are doing something wrong. If we let that stop us from doing even just a few mitzvos, it will eventually be hard to do ANY mitzvos.

At the time of Matan Torah, the Yidden stayed strong in their Emunah in Hashem. They realized that since Hashem runs the world, He knows what is best. We need to behave the way Hashem tells us to!

The same is true today. Even if other people think we are strange for following the halachos of Torah, we should be bold like a leopard and not worry about what they think.

That’s why this is the beginning of the Shulchan Aruch, because it is the yesod that makes keeping the whole Shulchan Aruch possible, and through that we will be able to get all of the brachos Hashem gives us for ourselves and our whole families.

We Need Kohanim!

A certain family of Chassidim who lived in Miami used to go to the Rebbe every year for Yechidus close to Yud-Beis Tammuz.

This family only had girls, and at the end of each Yechidus, they would ask a bracha to have a baby boy as well. But the Rebbe never answered them, so after several years, they stopped asking.

One year, they were very surprised when the Rebbe asked them why they weren’t asking for a bracha for children. The Rebbe pointed out that the father was a kohen. “Moshiach is coming, and we need kohanim to serve in the Beis Hamikdash!”

A year later, the family had a baby boy on Yud-Beis Tammuz. They named him Yosef Yitzchok.
