"It’s the last part of this process. In a way it’s just a piece of paper, because you saw those games." That's Ole Miss AD Bjork to Rebels fans on vacating 33 FB wins from the 2010-12, 2013 & 2016 seasons as the final sanction connected to NCAA investigations. The 2015 Sugar Bowl victory is not part of the wins that will be vacated. Bjork: "The Sugar Bowl trophy is, and will remain, in the Manning Center." (linklink)
"Certainly in my short time and what others have told me there’s never been a time where the legislature, the system president, the chancellor, the base of support throughout the state are all together, all in." Up in Missouri, Tigers AD Sterk says the recent penalties handed down by the NCAA have galvanized his fan base, which while certainly unplanned, weaves into his department's new fundraising initiatives. Sterk & Executive Assoc. AD for Compliance Humes met with the media at length yesterday to provide more context on their disappointment & dismay at the sanctions. Additional Sterk: "A lot of the discussion was procedural between the committee and enforcement staff. Which is why this caught us off guard because there wasn’t discussion of penalties. I can’t remember who said it but there was a lack of heat in the room. It wasn’t tense. It wasn’t back and forth and hostile. Some of those (hearings) can be." Further, Sterk believes it's a conflict of interest for Knight Commission co-Chair Cartwright to also be part of the four-person Committee on Infractions panel who rules on MU's situation, "I think that’s something the membership and overall the NCAA will need to look at as far as where it goes. There’s some distinct feelings (about academic reform) by the working group. Those haven’t been adopted by the NCAA membership yet. Those will be questions that have to be answered." Lots more. (link)
Continued talk on the new Transfer Portal. Wake Forest HC Clawson: "It's too easy right now. It's too easy to let kids quit." Stanford's Shaw: "The hopscotch approach to college really hinders their ability to have success in life." West Virginia AD & DI FB Oversight Committee chair Lyons on dialogue at the NCAA Convention in Orlando, "The membership has realized it's been more of a student-athlete-friendly waiver process. There were some discussions, saying, 'A waiver is extraordinary circumstances. You really have to prove that. Is 79 percent of the cases really that extraordinary? Are some of the facts a little bit more embellished?' They're asking the [NCAA] staff and the committees to take a closer look. It should be flipped. It should be 79 percent of the cases denied. [...] I'm not going to play Chicken Little and the first year say, 'The sky is falling' just because a lot of kids entered the portal. We have to let things run its course a little bit before we start a knee-jerk reaction." MAC Commish Steinbrecher says some coaches think we could be headed to implementing a one-time transfer exception. More. (link)
New UMKC AD Martin points to Wichita State as the aspirational brand for his MBB program, "If we have the right staff in place and support from students, the administration and stakeholders in the communities, there is no reason we can’t make that happen." Also part of Martin's new 100-day vision is to get all sports into their respective Top 100 rankings, increasing attendance & alumni involvement, as well as implementing of a new student-athlete leadership cabinet. Martin: "We’re going to have a better product and have a track record that will get the attention of people in KC, and that’s marketing for the university. We want to be a tool for engagement and visibility for the university." (link, link)
Some FB programs out there don't allow all student-athletes or assistant coaches to speak with the media. Arizona State is not one of those programs. Sun Devils HC Edwards: "You have to develop their skills, not only on the field but off the field. […] Coaches? They can talk. I tell them: 'Just make sure before you open your mouth you’ve researched what you’re about to say. Don’t just say stuff. And if you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything.'" Edwards points to his NFL background & media training the entire program goes through, "We all say something dumb. That’s part of it. That’s part of the learning process, though. You have to trust them. These players know I trust them, and the coaches know I trust them. I have no hidden agenda. I’m trying to help them be good men, be a great student, and be a really good teammate. That’s the deal here." (link)

We’re at the point now where the line is blurred between these top college baseball stadiums and a double-A stadium, even triple-A." (link)
The first NCAA WBB Tournament Top 16 seed reveal has Baylor, Louisville, Oregon & Mississippi State on top. Committee Chair & Nevada Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Bennett: "It’s been a very interesting season so far in terms of team movement from one week to the next and this first top-16 reveal reflects that. Each of our top four seeds separated themselves by having only one loss combined with signature victories. With still over a thousand games to be played over the final month of the regular season we know what was announced today is just a snapshot in time as we await the stretch run of the season, including conference tournament play." (linklink)

Providence AD Driscoll gets a bump up to VP. PC Prez Rev. Shanley: "In his 18 seasons as Providence College’s athletics director, Bob Driscoll has reinvigorated and transformed Providence College's athletics program, and led us to unprecedented success, all while maintaining a very clear focus on student-athlete success and wellbeing in competition as well as in the classroom." (link)
Southern Miss Prez Bennett voices his continued support for Golden Eagles FB HC Hopson after last week's developments around former Baylor HC Briles, "Coach Hopson assured me of his commitment to overseeing a program that upholds the values of The University of Southern Mississippi. I know Coach Hopson to be a man of high ethics and integrity, and I assured him of the University’s dedication to continuing a winning tradition. […] I consider the matter closed, and I am looking forward to working with Coach Hopson on our mutual priorities and shared goals for the Southern Miss football program and how it contributes to our vision for The University of Southern Mississippi." USM FAR Thompson goes with a 'Letter to the Editor' to make his point, "To be perfectly clear: The recent decision made by both USM president Rodney Bennett and interim athletics director Jeff Mitchell affirms the institution’s commitment to a culture that places student welfare above all other interests, athletic or otherwise. This priority must always prevail given the life altering adverse consequences that might otherwise occur." (link, link)
Seven current & former Grand Canyon Women's Soccer student-athletes have pushed back on what they claim to be a "toxic environment" implemented by HC Leader & AHC Rutledge. A 37-page letter sent to GCU leaders includes allegations of intimidation, improper training, belittling & cursing. Interestingly, it looks like one of the parents involved demanded $125K for a settlement. GCU says it already performed an internal investigation into the matter, "the overwhelming majority of student-athletes on the team expressed support for the coaching staff, characterized their experiences as positive." Fifteen current student-athletes have also voiced their support for the coaching staff, "(link - article, link - university statement, link - current players)
Stanford Executive Assoc. AD for External Relations Gray raps with 1.Question's @TaiMBrown as the pair go in on benefits of implementing a data analysis mindset throughout the organization, but also potential pitfalls of trying to make everything quantitative. Gray: "The business analysis mindset is not just about data analytics. It's really about  constantly being intellectually curious about what you're doing and how you can do it to better support the Student-Athletes. […]  Data analysis is a supplement for experience and intuition, it's not a replacement. […]  Data analysis without practical applications can potentially be a waste of time." (link)
Yahoo's Forde reviews eight MBB HCs who were dismissed at one program, but have another flying high at the moment. Texas-to-Tennessee's Barnes, Illinois-to-Kansas State's Weber, Indiana-to-Houston's Sampson, Georgia Tech-to-USF's Gregory, Bowling Green-to-New Mexico State's Jans, New Mexico-to-Liberty's McKay, LSU-to-Texas Southern's Jones & Virginia-to-American-to-Old Dominion's Jones. Forde: "Look at the standings in the sport and you’ll see an interesting thing: A lot of coaches currently at the top were deemed expendable by at least one school. Sometimes they were fired for good reason, sometimes it might have been a close call, sometimes it might have been a bad call." Forde also notes how the MBB regular season slate still has mega-matchups on the docket with Kentucky-Tennessee, Michigan-Michigan State & Duke-North Carolina still set to meet twice each. (linklink)

In the latest AthleticDirectorU podcast, Columbia AD Pilling & The Aspire Group Chairman & Founder Mullen discuss some reasons to outsource revenue-generation pieces of an athletic department's functions. Pilling: "I'm a big believer in hiring experts who fit what you are trying to accomplish. […] We always felt it was beneficial when we had a partnership rather than a vendor relationship." Mullen: "The single biggest thing in data is insights, tagging and tracking everything is of the utmost importance." More. Twenty-eight minute convo. (link)

The Fresno Bee's White argues Fresno State needs to operate within its means, takes some shots at Prez Castro, "More has left with you with less than ever before. The company accountants cannot make your gold-card spending add up. […] The athletic department had a $9.6 million budget when you parachuted into this red morass of financial neglect during the 2013-14 campaign. The current calendar is costing you $19.1 million. [...] President Castro, you need to start controlling the things you can control. Your athletic budget has got to come down, and it needs to bring down the accounts-payable with it." (link)

Maggette: "It has only been through media accounts and a statement from Meredith Watson’s lawyer that I first learned or heard of anything about these sexual assault allegations. I have never sexually assaulted anyone in my life and I completely and categorically deny any such charge." Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann writes on how he believes the university will investigate the situation, which is likely to include trying to speak with Watson & her attorney, gathering all relevant records from Watson's claim, contacting the registrar's office for Watson's academic records that could note her academic advisors, talking to the Durham Police Department, interviewing MBB coaches & more. (link, link)
