Bill Minteer (1943 - 2018)

Dear People of Grace,

Our friend Bill Minteer died peacefully at his home on December 19, 2018. Bill was a part of Grace from the church's earliest days and served on Team Flower for many years.

Bill was born in Albert Lea, MN on December 18,1943 and grew up on the Iron Range of Minnesota.  As a young adult,  Bill enlisted in the Navy and served as a senior Navy corpsman with a forward Marine artillery battery in Vietnam during the war. After completing medical school, he continued to serve as a medical officer, retiring from the Navy as a Commander in 1990. Bill established a private practice as a family physician in Silverdale from 1992-2015. He was loved by his patients, was dedicated to his work and to the community. At home, Bill loved to birdwatch, raised chickens and cultivated an extraordinary garden.

Bill was deeply committed to his family. He is survived by the love of his life, Danni, and his two beloved daughters, Kristen Alicia Minteer (Dave Pearce) and Amy Melissa Minteer (Ken Clair).  Kingston and Pax Wright, sons of Amy, were adored by their Opa. Bill's presence, courage, and spirit will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him. A memorial service for Bill will take place on Sunday, March 17 at 4pm at Grace Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s name to the American Heart Association, Doctors Without Borders or the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society in Bremerton, WA.

"Gracious God, nothing in all creation can separate us from your love. We remember before you our companion Bill, whom you made to explore your mystery and to come home to you. Enfold Bill in the arms of your mercy. Comfort all who grieve Bill's death, surround them with your love, and give us confidence in your goodness as we remember and give thanks for Bill. Amen."

In Christ's peace,

Wren

Red Bird

by Mary Oliver

Red bird came all winter
Firing up the landscape
As nothing else could.

Of course I love the sparrows,
Those dun-colored darlings,
So hungry and so many.

I am a God-fearing feeder of birds,
I know he has many children,
Not all of them bold in spirit.

Still, for whatever reason-
Perhaps because the winter is so long
And the sky so black-blue,

Or perhaps because the heart narrows
As often as it opens-
I am grateful

That red bird comes all winter
Firing up the landscape
As nothing else can do.
