Love your ocean – that was the invitation to learn more about the ocean and how to enjoy and protect it together. Thanks to an invitation to the largest marine recreational fair in the world, we started the activities in 2019 with a big splash. The large exhibition space co-organised by Boot50 management and the German Ocean Foundation attracted visitors with many interactive discoveries, a diversified programme on stage and other offers under the motto “Sciences, industry and society”. The half century celebration of the Boot fair attracted almost 2000 exhibitors and some 250,000 visitors from a 100 countries. Mundus maris contributed by running the Fish Sound Quiz of Q-quatics (FishBase) and informing about the plight and opportunities of small-scale fishers on stage and in the wider exhibition space.

As we plunged full of energy into these first activities in January and advance our planning for 2019, we are happy to acknowledge the donations of almost 1000 EUR received and promptly doubled by our anonymous donor. That was indeed a good start into the new year

Love your ocean – Boot50 participation was a success
Love your ocean - the ocean needs YOU! That was the message of the science camp with lots to discover thanks to an exciting programme at the shared space by more than 30 conservation-minded projects, companies and civil society organisations. The Boot fair in Düsseldorf, Germany, celebrated its 50th anniversary from 19 to 27 January 2019 with making a point for ocean protection. The management, in coordination with the German Ocean Foundation, offered this space around a big whale. Q-quatics and Mundus maris hosted the fish sound quiz of FishBase and other activities and contributed to the stage programme, spreading information and ideas for concrete marine protection and sustainable small-scale fisheries.

Investing in young people – an internship with Mundus maris asbl
As a student in many higher education institutions, you nowadays need to earn credits for your MSc degree – the equivalent of at least 200 hours of voluntary work – by doing an internship in a company or civil society organisation working in your field of study. This is a very judicious step towards confronting theory and practice. We offer such student volunteers a pertinent learning space with the opportunity to do their first publication and conference presentation, if work progresses well. Teaching transdisciplinarity, Cape Town, 21-24 January 2019
The global research network on small-scale fisheries, Too Big To Ignore (TBTI), continues to produce and organise vast bodies of knowledge about SSF around the world. As more case studies become available and the search is on for better understanding of their commonalities and specificities, it has become clear that their study requires transdisciplinary approaches and development of new methods of research and collaboration. TBTI convenes training workshops in all continents for this approach. Aliou Sall of Mundus maris served as trainer in the Africa workshop in Cape Town.

Road ahead – Q-quatics mini-symposium 2019, Los Baños, Philippines
Looking ahead to the forthcoming UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021 to 2030) Quantitative Aquatics wants to share research in progress with the colleagues of IRRI, from universities and research centres in the Philippines and any interested international scholars on campus. Dr. Mary Ann Bimbao, Executive Director of Q-quatics, welcomed guests and staff. She recalled the origins of FishBase, SeaLifeBase and Aquamaps and pointed to the many new possibilities these global databases had opened to ask questions and retrieve answers. Mundus maris made the connection to small-scale fisheries.
