February News

from Catherine Chambers Physiotherapy and Pilates
February, the month of love!

Celebrate by treating yourself to a massage or a Physiotherapy treatment. We also offer Vouchers for those who'd like to show their love for someone special, by gifting them with a session. The vouchers can be purchased at reception and are valid for three months from date of purchase.

Wishing you all a Happy, belated Valentine's Day. Hope that it was special!
With the year passing by so quickly, stop to think if you would possibly like to join our Pilates classes? We have started up an extra class on a Tuesday at 8am-9am, which is in addition to our usual times. Our Wednesday 6:30pm class is soon to start up again. If you are interested in coming to either of these classes, give us a call on 021 461 2159 to put your name down and to start your Individual sessions to prepare you for the classes.
Benefits of foam rolling

If you already attend our Pilates classes, you would know that we like to work with the foam roller occasionally! Foam rolling has some major benefits for your body.
Listed below are some of them:
  1. Effective pre-workout warm-up.
  2. Assists with post-workout recovery.
  3. Improved recovery time from pre- and post-workout rolling.
  4. Relieving the fascia (see paragraph below).
  5. Improved flexibility and mobility.
  6. Assists with avoiding future injuries.

Myofascial release

We're sure many of you have heard about fascia. This is the membrane-like tissue that is under our skin and wraps around and connects each of our muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels and organs. It allows our different parts to glide and slide against each other.

When we have an injury, stiffness or tightness in an area, the fascia has often become thickened and 'stuck' (or stiff) in that area too. This prevents the normal movement to happen in that area.

In order to stretch it out again and regain normal movement and fascia health we can use massage, soft tissue release, lynotherapy and foam rolling. It has been proven that releasing the fascia not only improves the extensible of the muscles, tendons and ligaments, but also improves the circulatory system function and flexibility.

If you are interested, please ask your Physiotherapist to demonstrate how to use a foam roller or massage ball to obtain these benefits.

Sports

Over the months of March and April, many of our clients will be partaking in sporting events such as The Argus, The Cape Epic and The Two Oceans Marathon.

May be a good time to book yourself in for a Physio session to ease those muscles from the hard training, or for a sports massage and/or to see if we can assist you with finding a comfortable set-up for your bike.
The Cape Peninsula Marathon was held Sunday, February 17th. To those who ran, well done!

If you have any photos of the sporting events you have or will partake in, please feel free to send them through for inclusion into one of our monthly Newsletters.
Chinese New Year

On Tuesday, 5th February, many celebrated the start of the Chinese New Year. The year of the Pig!

To our clients that honour this, we wish you all a belated 新年快乐 (xīn nián kuài lè) (Happy New Year).
February fun facts
  • It is the only month that can pass without having a full moon, due to the shortened month - this occurred in 2018.
  • The birthstone is the amethyst and the birth flower is the violet or iris.
  • It is one of the most misspelt words, across the world.
  • It is known as a "Twin Month". This means that February, March and November will always start on the same day of the week. In Leap Years, however, February's twin month is August.

Colour me colours that
haven't been named,
And build me with pieces
where none are the same,

And fill me with dreams
that are wilder than reason,

And make a person
that folks will believe in.
