MJ-school Opportunities
Creative Nonfiction Writing Workshop with Marita Golden

The UNC School of Media and Journalism will host Marita Golden — award-winning author distinguished in both nonfiction and fiction genres — for a week in residence Feb. 10-14 to include guest class lectures, a writing workshop and student-mentoring opportunities.

Register for Golden’s Tuesday, Feb. 12, Creative Nonfiction Writing Workshop from 4–5:30 p.m. in the MJ-school’s Reese News Lab, 11 Carroll Hall. The workshop is free and open to all students, but space is limited and reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Students are also welcome to attend MEJO 101 on Wednesday, February 13, to see Marita speak. The class takes place in Carroll 111 from 4:30 to 5:55 p.m.

Start Here / Never Stop Podcast
The MJ-school produces a podcast, which highlights the meaning behind the Start Here / Never Stop tagline through conversations between Dean Susan King and influential alumni, faculty, staff, students and speakers.

Writing for the Screen and Stage Minor

We are living in a world in which dramatic content has an increasing effect on our lives.
 The minor in Writing for the Screen and Stage is a two-year interdisciplinary program, housed in the Department of Communication, that offers underclassmen, from all corners of the university, the unique opportunity to focus specifically on the craft of dramatic writing, and is designed for those considering writing careers in theatre, film and television.Students who are accepted into the minor are also eligible to participate in the program’s Long Story Shorts play festival, and apply for the Department of Communication Hollywood Internship Program

The MINOR is open to freshman and sophomore applicants.  Those interested in the program must have a 2.4 GPA or better, and have taken one of: English 130(Introduction to Fiction Writing), English 132H (Freshman Honors in Fiction Writing), Communication 330 (Introduction to Writing for Film and Television) orDrama 231 (Playwriting I). The Washington D.C. office houses the majority of Ogilvy's government agency clients as well as its social change clients. Reporting Interns - GrepBeat
GrepBeat, a new-ish media property covering the tech community in Raleigh-Durham, is offering a reporting and writing summer internship for 2019. GrepBeat’s purpose is to tell the stories of this area’s tech startups and their entrepreneurs in an engaging and colorful way. Think of it as TechCrunch for the Triangle, with a splash of BuzzFeed for seasoning. GrepBeat launched on Aug. 7, 2018.

The internship is full-time and pays $480/week ($12/hour for a 40-hour week). It will last 12 weeks, likely from Monday, May 20-Friday, Aug. 9, though adjustments can be made depending on your school’s schedule. Apply by emailing jobs@grepbeat.com.
