Dr. Amy Metcalfe Awarded UBC Killam Faculty Research Fellowship

Congratulations to EDST’s Dr. Amy Metcalfe for receiving one of ten Killam Faculty Research Fellowships awarded across UBC for 2019.

This award enables faculty to pursue full-time research during a recognized study leave, during which Dr. Metcalfe will examine the early histories and public policy contexts of three leading research universities in the “Cascadia Innovation Corridor”: The University of British Columbia – Vancouver, The University of Washington – Seattle, and the University of Oregon.

Dr. Nancy Perry Appointed as the Dorothy Lam Chair in Special Education

Congratulations to Dr. Nancy Perry, Professor in ECPS, for her appointment as the Dorothy Lam Chair in Special Education for a five-year term (May 1, 2019 to April 30, 2024).

The Chair supports research and scholarly leadership in the area of special education through mentorship, conduct of an on‐going research program and working collaboratively with faculty and graduate students. Dr. Perry will continue her research on the role of self-regulation and self-regulated learning in promoting positive outcomes for children and youth who are vulnerable in learning and life, including children with specific disabilities and children whose struggles relate to a wide range of adversities.

Dr. Daniel Cox Appointed as the Myrne B. Nevison Professor in Counselling Psychology

Congratulations to Dr. Daniel Cox, Associate Professor in ECPS, for his appointment as the Myrne B. Nevison Professor in Counselling Psychology for a five-year term (February 1, 2019 to January 31, 2024).

The Professorship supports applied research in counselling psychology to advance preventive approaches in counselling for marginalized and at‐risk youth. Dr. Cox will build on his work using process-outcome research to develop a comprehensive understanding of online crisis counselling for at-risk youth.

Move UBC is Back

In alignment with UBC’s Strategic Plan, UBC Wellbeing and the Physical Activity Framework, increasing opportunities to be more physically active is a priority on campus.  With this, UBC has made February the official month to move!  Move UBC emphasizes the importance of sitting less and moving more too help increase the overall wellbeing of both individuals and our community.

Move UBC is a university-wide annual initiative to increase physical activity and reduce the time students, staff, faculty and the UBC community spend sitting. Move UBC aims to inspire people to move more and improve their overall health and wellbeing.

15th International Conference on Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability Recap

The Dept. of Curriculum & Pedagogy partnered with the On Sustainability Research Network to sponsor the 15th International Conference on Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability that was held at Robson Square January 17-19, 2019.

Dr. David Humphries, Professor of Environmental Policy at The Open  University (UK), Dr. Peter Cole (EDCP) and Dr. Pat O’Riley (EDCP) were the co-chairs of this conference at which there were over 285 delegates from 35 countries, including faculty and graduate students from the Faculty of Education.

The Dean meets with Dr. Ainsley Carry, Incoming Vice-President Students

January 30, 2019

Dr. Frank met with Dr. Ainsley Carry, the newly appointed Vice-President Students for a quick chat and welcome to the University. As part of the hiring committee for the role, Dr. Frank was delighted to meet with Dr. Carry before he formally begins the role on April 1, 2019.

Dr. Carry joins UBC from the University of Southern California (USC) where he has served as Vice President for Student Affairs since August 2013. He holds a faculty position in the Rossier School of Education and has served in leadership positions at Southern Methodist University, the University of Arkansas, Temple University, and the University of Florida. Prior to joining USC, Carry served as Vice President for Student Affairs at Auburn University.
