It should have been called “Crimes of the Art” when a group of four art specialists discussed the impact of damage and restoration on the art market on February 5th at Sotheby’s Institute in New York.
Organized and hosted by Ann-Marie Richard, Director of Fine and Decorative Art & Design at the graduate school, panelists included Alan Fausel, Executive Director of the American Kennel Club and formerly with Bonham’s; paintings conservator Michele S. Kay, and Elin Lake-Ewald, PhD, President of O’Toole-Ewald Art Associates, Inc. (OTE), innovators in damage/loss appraisals.
Beginning with an overview of historical damage cases in art, such as that of the Rokeby Venus by Velasquez, Michelangelo’s Pieta, and Rembrandt’s Night Watch, the discussion advanced to provide information on how damages to art are assessed, what impact conservation has on various types of artworks, and revelations on how materials and physical structure is affected by accident and injury to art.
As questions from the audience continued into overtime, Ms. Richard let the crowd know that this panel was just the beginning of a possibly more inclusive seminar to expand on damage and restoration as a subject of interest and importance to the greater art world.
“I think this subject warrants a full day in the near future,” commented Ms. Richard. The crowd around her agreed.
