COMING UP ON INSIGHT:

This week 15-year-old Haami Hanara was jailed for life for murdering a rough sleeper in Flaxmere. He was 14 at the time, making him one of the country's youngest killers. Disturbingly, he joins three other teenage murderers sentenced in Hawke's Bay in the past 12 months all with connections to the suburb.

Anneke Smith visited Flaxmere for Insight to find out what went wrong in the lives of these young people and what is being done to prevent it from happening again?

You can live stream or podcast this story from 8am, this Sunday here

Meet this week's reporter - Anneke Smith

Anneke has been a journalist for just over two years; starting off in print at Hawke’s Bay Today before making the leap to broadcasting with Radio New Zealand in June 2018. She has a particular interest in court reporting, and says while these murders were tragedies for the victims and their families, the age and lack of hope seen in each of these young offenders was also tragic. She hopes this Insight will foster informed and compassionate discussion about New Zealand’s young people and their futures. When not in the newsroom or in court you could well find her at the beach with a good book.

This week's podcast:

Running Dry: Can the Regions thrive without irrigation?

The irrigation industry argues that water schemes are not only essential to maintain New Zealand living standards and farmers livelihoods, but can actually improve the environment by evening out the impact of weather cycles and maintaining water levels in rivers. But critics say irrigation ruins rivers and is undermining New Zealand's clean green image. The Government last year removed state funding from big schemes, but is still backing smaller projects. Rural reporter Eric Frykberg has been exploring what the changes might mean for some of New Zealand's sun-baked areas.

Foetal alcohol - damaging babies' brains

In the sentencing of Haami Hanara( one of the teenagers focused on in this week's Insight) the court heard he suffered neurodisabilities. Foetal alcohol spectrum disorder is one cause of such disabilities.  Philippa Tolley investigated how many NZ children might have been damaged  by their mother's drinking while still in the womb.
