Happy Lunar New Year! Happy Black History Month! Happy Back to YAX Month!
Our Spring Session has begun, with our free arts classes starting this week and an orientation last Wednesday, filled with food, music, and activities for YAX students to get to know each other. We have lots of exciting events coming up this month...

 YAX friends and family have gotten to know Raffaella over the last 12+ years or so. From spearheading our design/build initiatives as our architecture faculty artist to teaching dance and bringing Carnaval to our students - and our students to Carnaval - Raffaella has been our artistic and programmatic visionary. She transitioned into program leadership as our Director of Programs and has held that role for nearly a decade. Over the last year she has made our collective dreams come true for deepening our connection to the Excelsior community and through presenting youth and faculty artist work at [x]space.
I am pleased to announce that Raffaella has been promoted to our Deputy Director here at YAX! I can’t think of another person that I would rather work beside on strategic visioning, partnership development, and continually improving and innovating our work. She is an integral part of YAX- a warm and fun presence for everyone who is involved- and WE LOVE HER! Please join me in sending her words of congratulations and appreciation for her incredible work at YAX to raffaella@youthartexchange.org.
Also, through her dance company, Sambaxé, she is going to have some YAX students in her 2019 Carnaval contingent! There’s still time to enroll! Adults welcome too - rehearsals on Sundays 4-5:30pm at ODC.

 Lunar New Year Artmaking and Celebration

Celebrate Lunar New Year and the year of the pig with us! We’ll have free food and music, and arts and crafts activities related to celebrating the new year for both adults and kids. Together we will decorate a new year tree, make tissue paper flowers and block prints, and color pigs. You can make art to take home, and to put it up to be displayed in the [x]space gallery space for the month of February! Invite your friends and family and feel free to bring your own charms or papers to hang on the tree!
We are also collaborating with Supervisor Yee's Office in District 7 for the Ocean Avenue Lunar New Year celebration - more info here!

Using newspapers, advertising inserts and recycled papers, create works of art, both functional as well as decorative. Come learn a simple paper rolling techniques that transforms everyday materials into something new.
This spring, YAX is thrilled to be partnering with Green Arts Workshops, which brings eco-conscious art programs to schools and community centers, to offer workshops at [x]space. All workshops are free and open to the public. This project is presented by Green Art Workshop and supported by the YMCA of San Francisco, Excelsior Collaborative, and Youth Art Exchange.
