Thursday 7th February 2018
It's the calm before the storm this week with league matches due to get underway starting this weekend with some of the younger age groups and next week for our adult footballers.

We get used to reporting on Cuala's Boys and Girls in Blue winning matches but below you'll discover that they can be pretty good drivers too...
ADULT MENS FOOTBALLERS PREPARE FOR ACTION

All four of our Men's Football teams will be getting their League Campaigns underway next Sunday 17th.  Our First team start away to Lucan Sarsfields in Division One.  Our Seconds are also away, to St Jude's in Division 4.  The Thirds gat a home game against the same opposition while the fourths hit the road to Swords against St Finians.  We'll have more detail on those in next week's CWN.

SUBSCRIPTIONS NOW DUE

Once more with feeling.  Please make sure that your annual subs are paid before you go back training or pull on a Cuala jersey.  If we play a match with an unregistered player on the field we will face sanctions...

Thanks to the vast majority of members who have paid their annual subscription so far.  This will be our last 'in your face' reminder.

All our dues for 2019 are now up for renewal, and there has been a change this year as you may have heard through various team messages.

The GAA registration system runs from January 1st to December 31st.  In order for the club to be registered with the GAA, you have to have renewed your membership.

Until you have done that you are not insured to train, play or coach within the whole of the GAA.  This is not just a Cuala issue.

We have held the prices the same as last year which compares very favourably with a lot of other clubs and activities.

There is also the option to register now but to spread the payment over three instalments, hopefully taking the pain out of having to find the money at this time of year.

We are pleased that over 80 per cent of our members have already registered and we hope that number will rise quickly with more teams, players and coaches returning to action.

Find out about and pay your annual membership

SAFEGUARDING COURSE

The Next Safeguarding Course, an essential every three years for coaches, will take place in the club on February 25th.

We had five starters for Mattie Kenny's Dublin last weekend.  Two out of two now in League 1B.  Sets us up nicely for a crack at Galway and Waterford in the coming weeks.

Mick Fitz, Con O'Callaghan and Conor Mulally will hopefully fly the flag for the footballers in Killarney on Saturday night.  It's on RTÉ TV if you don't fancy a trip that far south, though it's always a cracker of a game.

Jake Malone has a weekend off from Dublin duties so maybe he could give you a lift.  He emerged as the winner of a Safe Driving contest across all four Dublin senior teams organised by AIG in recent weeks.  Atta boy Jake.  He won't be reading this while pulled up at traffic lights, and neither should you be!

Great to see both Martha Byrne and Jennifer Dunne playing in Croke Park last week.  Sadly not quite the result we wanted, but every day's a school day.

During 2018, Amanda Stapleton, sister of one of the stalwarts of our senior hurling team, Shane, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. As a result, Amanda has not been able to work for the last number of months and this situation is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future. To assist Amanda and her family at this difficult time an Amanda Stapleton Fund has been established for all funds raised from fundraisers, donations etc. To date, the support of members of the GAA has been a major contributor and the family are greatly appreciative of this support.

With Shane being a valued member of our club, we in Cuala are organising a fundraiser in conjunction with Newstalk’s Off the Ball team. “An evening for Amanda” will see an Off the Ball Roadshow being held in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire on Wednesday the 20th of February next. The event will commence at 8pm (doors opening at 7.30pm) with all proceeds going to the Amanda Stapleton Fund. Tickets are €20 each with tables of 10 available for €200.

We'd really like a big turnout for this very special night.

Lakers Run

The Lakers Sports and Social Club in Bray provides support for 400 local people with special needs ranging in age from 5 to 75.  They are organising their annual Roundwood Reservoir 10K Trail Run for April 13th, and we said we would give them a shout out.

All the details are here if you fancy a wander round the water.

COMING SOON

Word is beginning to spread about a major club-wide event in May which will serve as a primary fundraiser for our ambitious plans.

Volunteers are being sought from each group within the club.  This could be your chance to shine, and please if you can, don't leave it to the mentors who already devote a lot of time...

Good luck to our four teams that we are fielding in the U12 Boys  Grading Leagues that get underway on Saturday.

If you have a story from any of the boys or girls teams that you'd like to share, drop an email to our editor here.

There is a corner of a foreign field that always will be Cuala...

Here's a thought.  When will you ever make a kid play better by making him feel worse?
