Meeting One Another Doing Good
“If we, each, doing our own part,” Pope Francis teaches, “do good to others, if we meet them doing good, and we do so slowly, gently, little by little—we will make that culture of encounters that we need so much. We must meet one another doing good.”
This Lent we can help build this culture of encounters by participating in the annual Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Lenten RICE BOWL collection. This collection helps support the work of Catholic Relief Services in over 110 countries, serving 136 million people.
CRS is the official overseas relief and development organization of the USCCB.  Guided by the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, CRS (with its global headquarters in Baltimore), assists people of all backgrounds, so they can lift themselves out of poverty and build the resiliency they need to stand on their own.
We will distribute CRS "Rice Bowls" (a simple cardboard box for collecting alms though Lent) after Mass on the first Sunday of Lent at all Masses, and provide additional information on how you can participate in Rice Bowl as part of your Lenten Journey.

St. V's Parishioner Mary Hennigan has a Masters in Public Health (Nutrition). She has worked with many different international development agencies, most recently for CRS for 15 years as a Senior Technical Advisor in Nutrition. Her work with CRS focused on programs in 110 countries early childhood malnutrition (from conception to age two).

…in the words of
Luke 6: 27-28

But to you who hear I say,
love your enemies,
do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you,
pray for those who mistreat you.

…in another’s words,
a prayer-poem –

the world
has turned
down-side up

disoriented
for so very long
the world suffers

can I risk
being
turned up-side down
inverted/converted

heaven brought to earth

so the world
from great to small
all of it
loved-to-joy

[a loving “amen”]

Meeting in Rome
"Pope Francis’ gathering of the worldwide leaders of conferences of Bishops around the issue of child sexual abuse and accountability ["The Protection of Minors in the Church"] has taken place in Rome.  As a parish community deeply concerned about God’s people, the issues being addressed and the healing of all concerned especially those who were victimized by clergy, I want all of us to pay particular attention to these proceedings, reflecting thoughtfully on what is transpiring."
Fr. Ray

The Vatican has established a website dedicated to this meeting
"This homepage was established to be able to transparently and authentically follow the process of change and development..... Everyone can use this homepage to form their own opinion on whether and how this will succeed in future." Federico Lombardi, S.J. Moderator of the Meeting

In Pope Francis' introductory remarks he said:
"In this meeting, we sense the weight of the pastoral and ecclesial responsibility that obliges us to discuss together, in a synodal, frank and in-depth manner, how to confront this evil afflicting the Church and humanity. The holy People of God looks to us, and expects from us not simple and predictable condemnations, but concrete and effective measures to be undertaken. We need to be concrete."

From the Jesuit journal America :
Pope Francis opened the four-day Vatican summit on the protection of minors in the church this morning by telling the 190 participants from more than 130 countries that “...the holy People of God looks to us, and expects from us…concrete and effective measures to be undertaken” to respond to the sexual abuse of minors in the church."
To reinforce his words he provided the attending bishops with 21 specific points to guide their discussion in the 11 working groups divided according to languages [N.B. Most of these have been in place in the Archdiocese of Baltimore for quite some time:]
Federico Lombardi, S.J., moderator of the summit, said...those points are formulated so as to bring forth concrete proposals from the group discussions that would be very important for “the follow-up” to this four-day meeting. Archbishop Scicluna explained that follow-up is likely to include changes to canon law.
