Transition Liverpool

Transition Café
In February’s meeting the focus of our discussions will be on Clothes and the Fashion Trade, Food and Food Waste and Recycling our household waste. We will look at the impact that individual action towards a sustainable lifestyle has on the environment around us. We will share our ideas about what we are doing and how we can most effectively encourage those around us to take positive action.
Carly from Sandfield Park School will be with us to talk about their project for collecting “hard to recycle” materials and putting them to good use (with Terracycle). Projects like Carly’s, and the other projects we have heard about can inspire further action by other individuals and groups which will be publicised during this Year of The Environment.
This meeting is on Wednesday 13th February at the Quaker Meeting House in School Lane, meeting at 6.30pm when home-made soup will be provided (please bring vegetarian food to share if you can). The talk will start at about 7pm, and the meeting will finish before 9pm.
If we all get together we can make a difference !

Transition Recipe. This month the soup at our meeting will probably be Spicy Pumpkin, and here is the recipe ……

Spicy Pumpkin Soup- A Winter Warmer (This is the soup recipe for the Transition Café meeting)

Some pumpkins store very well and can keep from autumn harvest to the following Spring in cool dry storage. This soup uses home grown organic Green Hubbard Pumpkins from my allotment.

Peel and deseed any sort of pumpkin or squash and keep the seeds to dry roast or roast in a dry frying pan as a snack. Peeling is easier if you quarter and oven bake it first and will caramelise the edges and intensify the taste. Boiling also makes it easier to  peel.
Ingredients:-
      1 mug chopped onions
      4 mugs pumpkin flesh
1 fat garlic clove or more if you have a cold
2 mugs peeled chopped sweet potato or potato
Generous pinch strong herb e.g. oregano, thyme and 1 bay leaf
Chilli to taste. I use Harissa Paste for depth of flavour
1/4 solid block coconut or 1 tin coconut milk
1 vegetable stock cube and/or Marigold Vegetable stock powder
      Honey 1 level tablespoon.

Method
Fry onion in coconut butter, or butter with a little olive oil added, till soft adding crushed garlic near the end. Add 1 litre  water.
Add all the rest of the ingredients except honey and simmer till vegetables are cooked. Remove bay leaf if used.
Liquidise, adding more water and/ or  plant or dairy milk to achieve your preferred consistency, add more chilli if needed and honey.
Salt to taste. Finely chopped parsley to serve.

Transition Meetups
The Meetups are going on holiday for a month. Not many people have been coming along, so we will see if we have any bright ideas to refresh what we are doing !! Suggestions Welcome !!

Progress Report

Progress Report ........ our Co-Housing Core Group is going well with good momentum …..
- we’ve agreed on our “Vision and Values”,
- we’ve got a subcommittee looking at our structure (Co-op, CLT, etc.)
- we’re working on our ideas as to what our scheme will be like
- and we’re looking at membership - how to join, how to live together, and how to leave

We’re making good progress, and we hoping to create a “prospectus” of what we are offering. Relatively little is “set in stone” at the moment, so we don’t want to publicise anything that may change before the final version.
We may be being optimistic, but we hope this might be ready in 6 to 8 weeks.

Million Stars
Did you know that 2019 is officially the year of green action?
If you are in the events industry, a local authority, a banqueting suite, hotel or theatre, this is the time to make a commitment to sustainability.

Million Stars Sustainable Events recognise that undertaking work towards the ISO20121 standard, individually can be a significant investment for some smaller organisations seeking to improve their sustainability practices.
We've identified a solution and have utilised our years of industry expertise to develop a 6 month peer to peer learning programme that enables organisations to work towards achieving ISO20121 and implementing a sustainability action plan but can do so by sharing the cost.
We will be running our programme at 3 locations across Liverpool, Manchester and Lancashire. There is a maximum of 10 places available on each cohort for up to 2 people from each organisation - see our Facebook page for more details
Customers are increasingly expecting venues, awards, fundraisers, theatres and event spaces to demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. You can be one step ahead of the game by starting your journey towards securing the internationally recognised management standard, now, in the year of Green Action! When it comes to sustainable events, the skies the limit at Million Stars!

Tents for Hire. We've got hundreds of tents available for hire. Rescued from festivals and repurposed by men in prison to an 'as new' condition as part of a work related activity programme, they are now available for hire.
The benefits of hiring tents, rather than buying include saving valuable storage space, supporting the ethos of a circular economy and supporting our mission to enable festivals to reduce the phenomenal 23,500T of waste generated each year.
We've hired to schools, corporate team building weekenders, events and even garden parties in the past few months. You could be next.
Help reduce your environmental impact whilst helping us widen our social impact

The Charter for Trees, Woods and People sets out the role trees and woods play in our lives, the rights we all have to the benefits trees and woodland provide, and our responsibilities towards maintaining and supporting them. Each of its 10 principles articulate the relationship between people and trees in the UK in the 21st Century.
We lean on each other, but for years we have been drifting apart. The people of the UK have a right to the benefits brought by trees and woods, and a role in keeping them safe and healthy. The Tree Charter recognises and protects this.

(It would appear the aim of the project now is to flood the tomato market in Australia and put a lot of small tomato producers out of business. As an interesting side point, Australia's "organic" certification accepts these new tomatoes as "organic" whereas in the UK the organic standard is based upon the medium the plants are grown in. These new technologies may displace small players from the market in favour of big players.)

Open Spaces
There is a lot of news about open spaces this month, nearly all of it bad news

OPEN GREEN SPACE IN SEFTON PARK TO BE DEVELOPED INTO ALL WEATHER CRICKET FACILITY
Liverpool City Council plans to give an area of public open space in the Sefton Park to Sefton Park Cricket Club. It will then be developed as an all-weather cricket facility, with three artificial wicket strips. This will result in the loss of an area of public land which is designated as a Local Wildlife Site, as part of the Draft Liverpool Local Plan. The site currently supports 12 species of butterfly, as well as grasshoppers, bumblebees, hoverflies and dragonflies. It has also been freely accessible to all members of the public since the nineteenth century.
Park users have until 10am on Friday Febuary 1st to lodge an objection
To do so, you can email the Property and Regeneration Team at legal.planning@liverpool.gov.uk You can also ask for acknowledgement of receipt of your email, to make sure your objection has been noted.
When emailing, please quote reference: Planned Disposal of Open Space at Sefton Park (Ref:PRT/BSB/L12293)
Notes:
The area supports the following butterflies: Small White, Large White, Green-Veined White, Small Skipper, Large Skipper, Gatekeeper, Meadow Brown, Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock, Comma and Speckled Wood; as well as other invertebrates, including grasshoppers, bumblebees, hoverflies and dragonflies

Community Wealth Building event in Liverpool, Saturday February 23rd - free but booking needed – The venue has been changed, so tickets are now available again.
“Following on from the perceived successes of the Cleveland Model of economic development in the USA, and the work done by Preston Council and CLES in the UK, there is increasing interest in how local regional areas can build their own economy, off the back of the spending power of large institutions that are rooted in the local area. That is what Community Wealth Building is all about.
We want to help build up a head of steam around the Community Wealth Building agenda in the Liverpool City Region. So come along on the day to learn more, listen to our keynote speakers, and take part in action-based breakout workshops throughout the day, all with the intention of giving you the skills and knowledge that will equip you to help us all grow the local economy again from the ground up, in a way that benefits the working people of the local area.”

Science News

New Scientist on 5th January 2019 had some unusual and interesting articles:-
1. Stone Age chewing gum has been discovered ! This has been fascinating for scientists. It was found on a Danish island, it’s dated at 6,000 years old – it’s now almost black, and it’s actually the pitch  from birch bark that was used to stick stone blades to wooden handles, and it also has some antiseptic properties. Some DNA has been extracted from the gum, so a lot has been learned about the woman who chewed it. Bacteria from her mouth have been identified, and fragments of food have also been analysed, so we know quite a lot about her diet – mostly hunter-gatherer in that era. Similar lumps from around Europe also have children’s tooth marks (p 10)
2. The Galapagos Islands. The latest research shows that the present day Galapagos Islands have risen fairly recently, but millions of years ago there was another chain of island nearby, which has now sunk, while the present islands have risen. So, the famous evolutionary differences may have developed over a longer time-scale than we thought, and the species may have migrated between iaslands over time in a different way thatn we previously thought. (p 15)
3. Green Flying. Air travel is (famously) one of the worst causes of CO2, but one where people are very reluctant to change their behaviour.. Some changes could be made:-
- Engine efficiency is always being improved
- Air routes could be shortened by making them straighter
- Planes could have smoother surfaces to make them more efficient
- Carbon-neutral fuel could be used
- Electric planes are even a possibility as battery tech improves
But, there’s a long way to go before any or all of these resolve the problem (p 32)

About Transition Liverpool
The main Transition Liverpool event is the monthly “Transition Café” which is on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. We also have a Meetup every week at the Brink on Thursdays from 4pm till 6, which gives more space for discussion and connecting in a more personal way. There is an Energy Group, and every October we put on a full-day Symposium. Our main concerns are to help create a “soft-landing” rather than a crash as fuel supplies fall and demand rises, and also as the effects of climate change increase. Transition is a development model for “advanced” societies to help us create better and more fulfilled lives for all, while using less resources.
We are part of the Transition Network, and Transition Town West Kirby are also very active. Our local Liverpool website is here, and our Facebook page is here.
Some of the main Transition publications are available online for free download - the original Transition Handbook, and the recent Essential Guide to doing Transition .
