22 February - Magaliesberg Club Evening

You're invited to an out-of-the-box talk (+ ice ream with sherry) by Gary van Vuuren a the MCSA MAG Clubhouse: Rietondale Park, Van er Merwe St & Soutpansberg Road, Rietondale, Pretoria, see their website for google map:     http://www.mcsamagalies.co.za/index.php/contactus  - be there on Friday for a special, controversial and relevant talk on Ecological Economics. Gary is nuclear physicist turned economist with green tendencies. His introduction:

For compelling reasons, economic growth is considered the benchmark for a sovereign's health. Growth contributes to well-being and improved living standards, so these important numbers are carefully scrutinised and analysed.
In the distant past, negative growth was regarded as Disastrous. Then no growth became a Terrible Thing. And now, just slowing growth (still positive but even marginally lower than the previous year) makes economists run screaming into the streets. For the mathematically-minded, we've become obsessed with second derivatives: rates of change of rates of change. It's increasingly evident, however, that since constant economic growth depends on increased exploitation of Earth’s natural resources, it's just not sustainable. We cannot continue to consume more water, burn more fuel and spew out more and more carbon dioxide at ever increasing rates. To use a cliché: There's no Planet B. Despite Elon Musk's Martian aspirations, Planet Earth is all we have. We're at an historical juncture where separating economic growth from physical growth mustbecome a reality or economic growth will start diminishing our well-being.

16 - 17 February 2019 - weekend: Climbing at Kransberg

Meet leader:  Chris Ziranek  -  email: cziranek@global.co.za

Kransberg offers good quality multi-pitch climbing at moderate grades.  With routes of between 3 and 6 pitches long and grades from 11 to 22 it is a great place to hone your multi-pitch skills before heading off to Blouberg.  The exposure is excellent, and the birdlife unrivalled.  Car camping. Bring your own water for the camp-site.

The walk in is steep, and for most sections without a path.  Expect a little bush bashing and wear long pants.  The hike to the base of the cliffs takes about an hour.   You must contact Chris if you wish to participate!

17 February 2019  -  Trad Orientation Day

Meet leader:  Bennie de Wet :  082 850 0941 - email : benniedewet@gmail.com

Purpose: To introduce existing indoor and sport climbers to traditional climbing. This is a practical introduction to traditional climbing.

Prerequisites: Participant must not have done any traditional climbing in the past and be proficient in climbing sport routes at grade 18.

Format and location: The trad orientation will be structured around the participants and will typically take one day in the Magaliesberg Tonquani Kloof. The day will focus on practical gear placement, route finding and climbing (lead and/or follow).
