Winter Issue
Missions, discoveries, 3D

Dear readers, it is a true pleasure to write this first letter as Iconem's new Director of Development.

I have been following Iconem's work over the past few years and am honoured to join this dynamic team of architects, archaeologists, and engineers, all driven by a similar mission, to protect cultural heritage across the world. I am particularly optimistic about this year and what we can achieve following a strong 2018. Iconem expanded its work to almost thirty countries; completed missions in Iraq, Turkey, Afghanistan, but also across France; and told the story of heritage’s crucial role in society through exhibitions and cultural events.

I have a background in archaeology and heritage preservation and have managed scientific and cultural projects in the Middle East and Central Asia for over a decade. With this, I hope to contribute to Iconem’s mission and help advance the direct role of new technologies in the protection of tangible and intangible heritage at the core of many communities’ identifies and of their past, present, and future.

I have already had the pleasure of meeting a number of you. I look forward to collaborating with many more of our dedicated, engaged partners in the coming months, and together support cultural heritage protection wherever it is needed.

Digitising Murad Khani, Afghanistan

Murad Khani, a section of Kabul’s old city, is a historic commercial and residential centre of the Afghan capital. It suffered major damage during the Afghan civil war and significant work was required to restore the district and its community. Turquoise Mountain, a British non-profit, non-governmental organisation that preserves historic areas and revives traditional crafts in Afghanistan, has carried out restoration efforts in Murad Khani.

Iconem digitised the area in 2018 for Turquoise Mountain. Our team used pole-mounted cameras to document this section of the old city as well as façades and interiors of three buildings. The final 3D models can be used to study the neighbourhood, the restoration, and the buildings by generating cross-sections and other architectural plans. These models Iconem were also integrated into Turquoise Mountain’s Google Arts & Culture project. Discover the models and learn more about Kabul’s Old City here

Our world’s cultural heritage is threatened. Looting, urbanisation, mass tourism, armed conflict, and climate change damage and destroy irreplaceable sites where cultures emerged, languages developed, civilisations thrived. These imperilled heritage sites embody humanity’s rich cultural diversity. It is crucial that we document and preserve them now. Iconem’s mission is to further conservation of these endangered places by digitising them for exploration and study, today and tomorrow. Our expert team travels the globe, combining the large-scale scanning capacity of drones and the photorealistic quality of 3D to create digital replicas of our most treasured places, record them for future generations, and champion them today.
