City Council Update


Monday, Feb. 11: 7 p.m., Regular City Council Meeting.

Pending agenda items: City Council will consider a resolution that will initiate the process to formally make several parcels in Hayden Park on Green Mountain part of the city of Lakewood because they aren’t currently within the city’s boundaries. Council will also consider approving the projects for the 2019 Neighborhood Participation Program, which are grants for projects important to neighborhoods. Finally, council will consider setting the Feb. 25 Regular City Council Meeting as the date for public hearings on the following items:
  • Establishing licensing for lodging facilities.
  • Establishing licensing for short-term rentals.
  • Rezoning property at 1950,1960 and 1970 S. Newland St.
  • Amending the initiative and referendum procedures.

Residents brave the cold for Winter Bike to Work Day 

Lakewood is 26th in the world for sign-ups for today’s Winter Bike to Work Day. Thank you to our partners and to all who braved the cold to ride. This fearless resident stopped by the Addenbrooke Park station this morning for Village Roaster coffee and Santiago’s burritos. This effort was a collaboration of Lakewood, Alameda Connects, Lakewood Bicycle Advisory Team and Denver Regional Council of Governments.

Lakewood mayor to lead regional efforts
Mayor Adam Paul will lead the Metro Mayors Caucus this year in its efforts to address housing and transportation issues, which are the most pressing concerns facing the region in 2019. The Metro Mayors Caucus includes 40 mayors from the Denver area, and during its recent annual planning session the caucus named Mayor Paul as chairman of the organization. The mayors also identified transportation and housing as their priority for the year.


Lakewood hosts first 50th Anniversary Pop-up Party

For Lakewood’s 50th Anniversary celebration, we’re bringing the party to you. We will be throwing pop-up parties in the community to surprise and dazzle you when you least expect it. You never know where we will pop up. Just be ready for a quick 20-minute celebration anywhere! Watch Lakewood’s first party and visit Lakewood.org/50 to check out the weekly trivia question and learn about Lakewood’s official song, tree and flower. 

50-year-old businesses featured
Lakewood’s Economic Development Team is highlighting businesses that have been a part of the city for 50-plus years on its Twitter account as part of the City’s 50th Anniversary celebration. The latest business featured is the Lamp Post Inn at 5370 W. Mississippi Ave. Check out the others at @LakewoodEconDev and learn more at Lakewood.org/EconomicDevelopment.

Lakewood is building a better website, and your input will make the site more useful for you. Please take a survey at Lakewood.org/Rebuild. Your feedback will help us create a website that offers more online services, works across more devices and makes it easier to find the information you need.

Subdivision application
The City has received a minor subdivision plat application to subdivide the properties at 8845 and 8865 W. Alaska Place to create an additional single-family lot. For more information, please contact Brea Pafford, project planner, at 303-987-7534 or brepaf@lakewood.org.

Subdivision approved
Lakewood’s planning director has approved a minor subdivision application for 11353 W. Colfax Ave. to subdivide one lot into two. For more information, please contact Stephen Wilson, project planner, at 303-987-7527 or stewil@lakewood.org.

Economic development specialist receives top award
Lakewood Economic Development Specialist Vanessa Zarate received the Young Professional of the Year award at the West Metro Chamber's 72nd Annual Chairman's Gala. As president of the Young Professionals and one of its founding members, Vanessa has created monthly professional development and networking meetings, and she has helped to increase the involvement of young professionals and others involved in the program.

Johns Hopkins engineering course offered
Red Rocks Community College will offer the Johns Hopkins University Engineering Innovation Summer Program to motivated high school students for the first time in 2019. This is a college-level summer program for students interested in or curious about engineering.  The course will be offered from June 24 through July 19. Arts in Belmar for February
Belmar will celebrate the year of the pig in its annual Chinese New Year show that includes nearly 60 artists creating a piece for large panel. The opening reception for this exhibit is 5-9:30 p.m. Feb. 9. Details are available on the Arts in Belmar Facebook page.

Health department celebrates 60th anniversary
In 2019, Jefferson County Public Health is celebrating its 60th anniversary of service to the residents of Jefferson County. Its mission is to promote and protect the health of all residents across the lifespan through prevention and education efforts, as well as partnerships with other organizations, agencies and businesses. JCPH has five locations throughout the county in Lakewood, Golden, Arvada, Wheat Ridge and Littleton. To celebrate its 60th anniversary, JCPH will be sharing stories from its workforce and its history on Facebook, @jeffcopublichealth, and Twitter and Instagram, @jeffcoph.
