Ocean Data Labs Community Newsletter

February, 2019

Join us at an Ocean Data Labs workshop!

Well, it's been a while since we sent our first newsletter last fall (and for that we sincerely apologize), but the Data Labs (aka Data Explorations) project team has been hard at work ramping up for our intensive series of faculty professional development workshops this year!

We had a tremendous response to the call for applicants for our first workshop next month.  And while we couldn’t accept everyone to our inaugural event, we have been furiously working on the logistics for several additional workshops that will take place around the country this summer. We are excited to announce that the applications are now open for our summer 2019 workshops.

At these workshops, you will work with fellow professors to learn about and engage in efforts to bring OOI data into your undergraduate courses.  Professors from Community Colleges, Primary Undergraduate Institutions (PUI), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) who teach introductory courses (e.g. 100 and 200 level) with a strong emphasis on oceanography themes and concepts are especially encouraged to attend these workshops.

OOI Ocean Data Labs Development Workshops

Are you interested in learning how use and develop your own educational resources from the OOI?  Please consider joining use for one of our 4.5 day development workshops.

At the workshop you will learn how to use OOI Data in your undergraduate teaching, work with your peers to redesign and existing Data Lab, modify Python or Matlab code (using GitHub and Jupyter Notebooks), or create something totally new!

We invite you to apply to one of these upcoming opportunities:

  • June 2-6, 2019 @ Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ
  • July 22-26, 2019 @ Asilomar Conference Center, Pacific Grove, CA
  • August 19-23, 2019 @ Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA
Applications for all 3 workshops are due March 17, 2019.  All information in the application will be kept confidential and is strictly for planning purposes for the workshop.  We will notify you by March 31, 2019 as to the status of your application.

Given space and funding constraints, we can only accept a limited number of participants. Support for travel and workshop participation is provided, thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation. In addition, a $300 stipend is available for providing evaluation feedback on student use of the Data Labs.

Mini-Workshop @ the Earth Educators' Rendezvous

Mini-workshops have a narrower scope, focusing on ways to incorporate existing OOI resources into your courses, including our OOI Data Explorations, rather than customizing resources for your classes.

Our first mini-workshop will be held as part of the Earth Educators' Rendezvous in Nashville, TN. The workshop will take place over 2 half-day sessions on July 16-17.

Applications are due by March 15.  Partial stipends are available to help offset the cost of attending the Rendezvous.
Mini-Workshop Information
All of these workshops are sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and facilitated by Rutgers University.

We’re excited to get this project off the ground and love hearing from the community. So please let us know what you’re up to. And we hope you'll consider applying to join us at one of our workshops this summer as well!
