Where disability matters

One Place East urges Redbridge Council to drop ‘disability tax’

One Place East, writing in response to Redbridge Council's budget consultation, urges the Council to scrap social care charging which is unfair and counterproductive as well as a costly tax on disability and old age.

Our recent survey on social care charges reveals that Disabled people and carers face the possibility of going without the care support they need, cutting back on expenditure on food, heating, clothing, and in some cases increasing levels of debt.

Jon Abrams said:

“Support provided under the Care Act is meant to improve the wellbeing, independence and choice of Disabled people. By charging many for that support, the system is causing anxiety, stress, confusion and poverty. Social care charging raises a relatively small sum of money and is likely to be counterproductive as it pushes up costs elsewhere as Disabled people, older people and carers go without support and cut back on expenditure on food and heating."
