"We need to feel the cheer and inspiration of meeting each other, we need to gain the courage and fresh life that comes from the mingling of congenial souls, of those working for the same ends." ~
Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, editor of Women's Era, the first newspaper for African-American women, the first vice president of the National Association of Colored Women and a co-founder of the American Woman Suffrage Association.

League of Women Voters of Henderson County
Lunch and Learn
Thursday, March 14 from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm
Hendersonville Community Co-op meeting room
60 South Charleston Lane Hendersonville, NC
Sunshine Week was first celebrated in 2005 and was started by the American Society of News Editors to educate the public on the importance of open government. Sunshine Week continues to celebrate access to public information and inform on the dangers of excessive and unnecessary secrecy by our various governmental entities. In honor of this year’s Sunshine Week, LWVHC Observer Team invites you to a lunch and learn for League members and the general public on open records laws. We’ll get a little background on the topic and hear from a panel of journalists on their experiences and perspectives on obtaining information using these sources today. The panel will include Bill Moss, Editor of Hendersonville Lightning and Angie Newsome, Founder and Executive Director of Carolina Public Press, who is a media sponsor of this event.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch and an inquiring mind!
Additional parking is available behind the Self-Help Credit Union next door. The event is free and open to the public. LWVHC celebrates Diversity, Equity and Inclusion by welcoming all members of our community.
is a Co-Sponsor of this Event

The proposed Voter ID law (SB 824) to implement the Constitutional Amendment passed last November is now available for review and comment. Public comments can be submitted until March 15. Now is the time to advocate for fair guidelines for student IDs, adequate funding for county Boards of Elections to issue photo IDs, clarification on ambiguous wording in the law, and anything else that concerns you. Comments can be submitted through email to Public Comment Portal (also available at the short link: demnc.co/idrules).
They can also be emailed directly to the State BOE at rules@ncsbe.com.
Or you can mail your comments directly to Katelyn Love, Deputy General Counsel, PO Box 27255, Raleigh NC 27611-7255.
The basic details of the law are HERE. Additional information on the law and how to submit public comments can be found at demnc.co/protectvoters.

Annual Gala Luncheon
June 21, 2019
11:00 am
Grand Ole Hall - Highland Lake Inn
|
|
|
The LWVHC annual meeting, scheduled for Friday, June 21, will include a silent auction and raffle fundraiser. We’re hoping to get donations that will thrill our members and provide us with additional, vital operating funds to support the League’s advocacy and educational programming. Will you help? We’ll need everyone’s support to make this event the success we know it can be.
What you can do: Think about your favorite people and service workers. Maybe one or more would be willing to donate a service or product. Consider your favorite salon, massage therapist, theater company, florist, artist, restaurant, country club, winery, art gallery, . . . consider a weekend get-away at your vacation home, or teaching a cooking or art class . . . almost any personal service or gift certificate will do. We believe if you ask folks you have a personal relationship with, they might be more than willing to contribute something to our cause.
All donors will be recognized in print.
Please contact Susan Senko at silentauction@lwvhcnc.org or leave a message at 828-891-8087 to make your donations, if you have questions about what can be donated, or if you would be willing to be part of our auction/raffle team.
