Hello Musicians,

Spring Extension Bands


As many of you know, the standard Ottawa New Horizons Band (ONHB) season includes a fall session from September to December and a winter session from January to April.  Over the years, a variety of more informal spring extension bands, sometimes organized by volunteers, evolved to provide more playing opportunities after the final concert in April. 

This year, all spring extension bands have been organized by the board of directors, and all registration will take place through the website.  The session is 8 weeks long, with a fee of $90 for one band, and $50 for each subsequent band.  Due to the shorter rehearsal period, withdrawal must take place before the second rehearsal to receive a full refund minus a $25 administrative charge.

Here's what will be offered in spring 2019:

Spring Extension Concert Band 1 (SECB1)
- Level: beginner/intermediate level
- Rehearsals: Wednesdays 6:30-8:45 p.m.
- Dates: Apr. 24 - June 12
- Location: Brookfield High School (and Woodroffe United Church in June)
- Band leader - Sheila White

Spring Extension Concert Band 2 (SECB2)
- Level: intermediate/advanced
- Rehearsals: Tuesdays 6:30-8:45 p.m.
- Dates: Apr. 23 - June 11
- Location: Brookfield High School (and Woodroffe United Church in June)
- Band leader - Adrian Cosstick

Spring Extension Jumpin' Jazz Band (SEJJB)
- Level: Introductory
- Rehearsals: Tuesdays 6:30-8:45 p.m.
- Dates: Apr. 23 - June 11
- Location: Brookfield High School (and Woodroffe United Church in June)
- Band leader - Cathy Wilcox

Spring Extension Downtown Jazz Band (SEDJB)
- Level: Intermediate
- Rehearsals: Thursdays 7-9p.m.
- Dates: Apr. 18-June 6
- Location: Nepean High School (and Woodroffe United Church in June)
- Band leader - Rocco Romeo

Spring Extension Two Beats Ahead Jazz Band (SETBA)
- Level: Advanced
- Rehearsals: Mondays 7-9 p.m.
- Dates: Apr. 15-June 10 (with 2 holidays and an additional final rehearsal/concert TBD)
- Location: Nepean High School (and Woodroffe United Church in June)
- Band leader - JP Lafleur
- As for other sessions, anyone interested in joining TBA's spring session should discuss with the band leader, JP Lafleur.

Registration will run from Mar. 25 - Apr 6 or until bands reach capacity, so early registration is recommended.
 

Two Beats Ahead Fundraiser for Guide Dogs for the Blind


Once again this year, you can dance to the big band sounds of TBA, in support of Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind. The concert takes place on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Orchard View Wedding & Event Centre.  Click here for more details.


News from the New Horizons International Music Association (NHIMA)

 
NHIMA is planning their first international tour open to all New Horizons members. It will be to Ireland from June 1-10 in 2020. This will be a band with strings. Registration for the trip begins now and will close on March 15, 2019. NHIMA offers camperships for certain 2019 band camps. These camperships are available to individual NHIMA members who are first time attendees at one of the listed camps. Recipients will be selected through a lottery process. The camps and campership amounts are:
  • $250 Camperships - Roswell New Horizon Band/NHIMA Music Camp in Helen, GA
  • $200 Camperships - New Horizons Band Camp In Santa Rosa, CA
  • $150 Camperships - New Horizons Orchestra Camp  in Rochester, NY
