Putting the horse before the cart
Layout planning and layout design aren’t really the same thing. Layout Planning addresses more strategic issues and must come before we get to the more tactical topics such as track arrangements, curve radius, etc. Lance's clinic will cover picking a theme, choosing the right layout size and complexity for your situation. Lance will also look at reasons why layout construction often stalls, as well as making your layout comfortable to interact with. This clinic is sure to help anyone either planning or building a layout. Even those who already have a layout completed will find something of interest in this clinic.
Using photos to color your structure surfaces
Lance's second clinic will discuss why paint isn’t the only way to add color to your structures. In many cases a carefully prepared and sized photograph glued to a styrene surface can produce very convincing results. This clinic will cover taking the photos you want to use, editing them, sizing them, printing them out, and adhering them to your structure. This clinic will help you add another tool in your buildings and scenery arsenal. Don't miss it!
Dr. Geoff Bunza: Build a Simplified WiFi Throttle You Can Customize
In addition to his already sold out workshop on Arduinos (we've got a waitlist available) Dr. Geoff Bunza will be presenting a clinic at this year's Modellers Meet on building your own WiFI Throttle. This simple WiFi throttle connects directly to the JMRI WiFi server, and it is not dependent on your DCC base station. It will support loco address selection, six (or more) function switches, speed and direction control, and it runs on a standard battery. You can customize and expand it to perform multiple functions at the touch of a button, but you can also limit its functionality for guest operators. It uses readily available parts for a one or two evening project. Don't miss this interesting presentation by one of the best known electronics gurus in the hobby today.
Mike Pagano - Building a rail-marine interface mechanism: A new way to model & operate a Rail-Marine operation
British Columbia has been one of the prime locations for railway barge operations since railways first arrived in the region. Mike's presentation will cover what a Rail-Marine Interface Mechanism (RMIM) is and discuss some of the construction steps described in a series of N scale Railroading magazine articles.
Mike will discuss how this idea enhances a Rail Marine Operation, how it works and how you can fit the plan into your railroad. As well, he will show how to make the operation look like your specific prototype, and he will have tips on modeling marine vessels and much more. This promises to be a very interesting clinic on a topic that is very popular with those modelling the railways of British Columbia.

British Columbia has more than just CN, CP and BC Rail active within it's borders. The Great Northern was a major presence in the province as well, and its trackage is still active as the BNSF today. This presentation addresses the question of “How did the Great Northern Railway influence the development of Vancouver?” The presenters will take you through the politics of railroading in the early 20th century, the arrival of the GN in Vancouver and the digging of the Grandview Cut.
As well they will cover the three depots that served the GN, the draining and development of False Creek, up to the opening of the majestic third and final Great Northern Depot that served Vancouver from 1917 to 1962, before being demolished in 1965. The Great Northern was indeed a major player in rail transportation in Vancouver for many years, especially between 1900 and 1920. This clinic presentation takes us back in time and looks at how much influence the Hill family and their Great Northern Railway really had in our province.
